2000 Mazda protege fuel door does not open from inside car with the lever. Has not worked for more than 1 year. Manually opening the door now. Anyone know how these work, what the fix may be?

Yes,I owned one for years and had the same problem with it.The rod that is pulled back by the cable needs to be precisely aligned with the fuel door.You may need to bend the door slightly with your fingers to make it fit well enough to spring open when the latch is lifted.

Probably a bad or misadjusted actuating cable...have a shop or dealer look at it and get pricing to replace it.
