There's a threaded hole about 3/4" to 1" diameter on the driver side head, right of and below the first exhaust port. Can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks

That's probably the hole for the coolant temp sender, it's in about the right area. That's where the one on my Nova is. (See attached picture where the wire is coming off to the right and down from the first exhaust port.)

It's not a coolant temp port, not if it's on the exhaust side. I would have to say it is for different styles of power steering pump brackets. The older one's had a bracket that bolted there. Look into the hole and see if it ends, or if it goes through. If it ends (you can see the bottom) it is just for another application. Nothing to worry about.

Probably a temp sensor hole...more accurate reading than in the intake manifold but you need the right sensor for it.

this hole is for extra brackets for the front of the engine that older Chevy's used for accessories,remember the head can be used on both sides of the engine, so if it was on the other side it would be in the front.
