I'd go along with Matt's suggestions...the Bu-ick motor does not have much in the way of HP upgrades...better to swap in a more powerful motor and a trans that can handle the extra power. Lots of room in the Bonneville engine bay for a V-8. Computer and wiring would need to be changed as well. You could also swap the rear end for one with better gearing like 3.55 or close to it versus a standard one in the car which is probably 2.90 or so. It won't increase the HP but will make it seem like it did. Have to change speedo gearing in the trans if you do this.

There are some parts for the 231 V6 engine... Edelbrock makes a 4 barrel manifold, I'd put that on along with a holley 390 CFM 4 barrel. While you've got the manifold off, it's just a few more steps to get the heads off, and if you want a gee-whiz improvement, get those heads ported. Maybe get some bigger valves installed. The most cost effective upgrade, if you can find a set, is a header pipe. Helps the engine run cooler, gets rid of exaust gasses easier, and might burn out your starter faster. (At least the do on some chevy V-8's)
And if you've lost all your sense and money is no object, you could turbo it...

If you want a major horsepower upgrade, swap the engine. There's so many things that fit in that car it's not even funny. Some possibilities:
1. Smallblock Chevy V8 - cheap and lots of parts available
2. Buick T-Type / Grand National V6 - the turbo version of the motor you have
3. Cadillac 500 - really huge motor and really different
If that sounds two drastic, it responds Ok to traditional speed parts. I'd see if you can find headers and swap the intake manifold for one that uses a small four barrel carb. Then add a slightly more aggressive cam if you're up to it. Check Summit and Jeg's; they carry most major brands of performance parts for domestic cars.
