My 1994 Saturn SC2 just turned 151,000 mi. It's now showing a leak in the sunroof, getting water all over the interior top. It's started to show a problem with the timing chain (very audible). It's also got one CV joint breaking down. I also think that the oil rings in the pistons are starting to break down (it only smokes when you push it a bit hard). Is this worth fixing? I'm seeing that it'll cost me about $350 to buy the parts to do the timing set and replace both axles.... but the time required is immense. And as far as I can tell this is maybe a $800-$1000 car even if I do fix it...

I recently decided to purchase a impressively well kept Toyota Avalon of 2000 vintage. The car is in great shape, but there is a little possible problem with the car.

The owner only managed to put 29K miles on it and as such only did minimal maintenance on the car, oil changes and tire rotation. Knowing a little about cars, I know that car batteries and tires, even if not heavily used are recommended to be replaced at around the 5 or 6 year mark.

This car has all original parts, battery and tires included. I'm wondering if this recommendation is a rule of thumb, or should I follow it strictly and go ahead and replace these parts even if they don't appear to be in bad condition.

This weekend i made two trips from Roseburg Oregon to Eugene Oregon. It's about 180 miles round trip each time. So thats around 360 miles, plus the driving i did in town. All together i went 450 miles. My car (1989 Ford Tunderbird) is supposed to get 27 on the freeway, but i have gotten 30 before. This weekend, it seemed to be sipping a bit more than it should. I went around 75mph the whole time. What could cause my Mpg to drop? It had a recent tune up and i keep everything up as well as i can.

-The exhaust tip has a black ring around it, that wasnt there before this weekend.

- When my front rotors get wet, they steam, but i cant feel them dragging, and the car seems to have the same amount of power.

Thats about all i can think of...

I have Toyota corolla 1993 with 4AFE engine. Apparently there is no problem with the engine, but I see that color of the engine oil is turning dark very soon. I can also see black powder in the engine exhaust. I don’t feel any oilishness in this powder. The engine oil level however slightly reduces in a month time. My engine looks good as it is still throwing water from the exhaust however I feel that compare to before engine sound and idle speed is increased a little bit. What could be reason for change in oil color? Can worn-out engine valve seals cause change in oil color? Any ideas?

Test drove the truck and it runs flawless, has a manual trans which shifts smooth. Light has been on only a week at the most. When i first looked at the truck the check eng light was not on. Then about a week later when i went to test drive it, the light was on. Truck has 103,xxx miles and just had 100k service done by a local dealer. Only aftermarket is a Flowmaster exhaust.
