Battery operated bikes are clean and environment friendly. The batteries are rechargeable and can be used several times over and over. However, they cannot be used to travel at high speeds. The battery tends to run out quickly. They cannot carry heavy loads, most of them run effectively if there is a single person travelling.

If you are planning to get one - wait for some more time, so you can buy one with proven results.

I support electric bikes.
we classify them in four general areas:

Junk most under $300
limited use $300-$700
extended use $700 - $1500
Car replacements $1500 up

the current range record without stopping is over 100 miles. (tour del sol 2006)

some folks can get over 1000 trips from a set of batteries. Light weight batteries cost lots more, if you can handle the weight - Lead batteries are a good value.

The Giant Lafree Lite at $1200 was a very good extended use ebike 20 real mile range carrying a 225 lb person thru hilly terrain. judged best ebike in the world by atob magazine 2003 and 2004.

Adding a cyclone-usa kit, a crystalyte or a Bionx kit can make your bike a very good extended use bike. go with a stoke monkey or an e "velomobile" for a car replacement.

you can google these items and discover answers for yourself.

Over ten thousand people use ebikes to commute to work and run errands in the US.

No State plates, no insurance, no petro, service you can do yourself, healthier life, all make them the transportation of choice for many.

the electric cost is about 5 cents a day, the mechanical costs are the same as a regular bike, you need to replace the batteries about every 3 years. (could be $80 or $300)

As an owner of a battery operated bicycle. I am astounded and extremly pleased with how well they do work. I own an I-zip electric chopper. I have had it for almost a year now. It is quiet, dependable, and just plain fun to ride.

The only real problem I ever had with it was a flat tire. Which of course was a quick and easy fix considering I had numerous bikes growing up and had to learn how to fix them myself.

I paid just over $250 dollars for the bike itself. I added a couple of small things to make it ridable at night. Still under $300 total.

It gets about 20 miles out of a full charge. If I take it easy on the throttle and pedal it every now and again I get alot more. It does 20 MPH which is fast for a bicycle. It has very good power and will pull me up any hill I ask it to.

I have seen quite a few more bikes in the I-Zip line that I liked. I am sure that they will have something that will fit your needs.

Just like anything else, buy something with a good reputation. If you treat them good, don't try to do more with them than they are rated for and follow the service schedule they do well and last good. Batteries are bought according to how long they last. Buy the best you can get. They are cheap to operate, but you can't go too far or fast.
