Unbolt the driveshaft from the differential and pull it out of the transmission.Remove the header pipes from the manifolds and leave them in place. Remove the inspection cover right behind the oil pan and remove the 4 bolts holding the torque converter to the flex plate. Using a transmission jack, support the transmission while you remove the rear mount. There are 7 bolts holding the transmission to the engine and some are difficult to reach. You need a long extension and a u-joint socket. After removing these bolts, reach up in the torque converter housing and pry the torque converter back about 3/8 inch to clear the hole in the crankshaft, pry the transmission back far enough to clear the engine and lt the jack down. A tip for you if you plan to put it back in. Get two 3/8 x 3" sae thread bolts and cut off the heads. Screw them in the bottom bolt holes hand tight to aid in stabbing the transmission back in straight,

I just did a ford ranger -standard - new clutch job.

Assuming you have it jacked up - make sure you do not make the mistake I did. I was using a motorcycle lift and a bracket I build with 4x4 to hold the trans and the lift would not lower the trans low enough to pull out from under the truck. pain. i worked around it.
Anyway jack the engine first - use boards so you do not dent the oil pan.
Jack the trans up just a little.
remove the drive shaft - slide out - have a bucket to catch the trans- fuild that will leak out the back of the seal.
(also lots of rags)
Tricky part for me. 11 bolts around the bell housing to engine. two on top where a bi*** had to move the engine and trans down and use around 2 1/2 feet of entensions to reach the 2 top bolts.
good luck
