Maintenance & Repairs - November 2006

I am quickly approaching 100K miles and am planning on changing plugs and wires, and ignition coil boot. I just changed the fuel filter today, and the air filter about 5,000 miles ago. I'm doing a little at a time since I'll get platinum plugs and wires and they are pricey to me.

My husband thinks we should also change all the belts and hoses. My father is a mechanic and I was raised in his shop, and I've never been taught to change those until they are worn out or you actually have a problem. You should know that my husband knows nothing about vehicles except how to change his oil. I've taught him several things about it over the past couple of years. His line of thinking is that he'd rather change them now so that there's less possibility of me breaking down later. I see that line of reasoning, but I just don't think it's necessary.

I need opinions other than my dad's. Please cite sources, preferably websites I can go to, so that I can be convinced or convince him.

Rather than use Toyota car maintenance which is expensive, and now that car is off warantee, which car repair franchise is good for basic maintenance like oil changes, winterizing the car, checking brakes, etc.?

I own a 2000 gmc sierra 1500 4.8L and i have a k&n cold air and flowmaster dual exaust, now i've had these on here for about a year now and i've never had a problem, started when i went up moosehead for a weekend and the roads were veryyy dusty and on the way home my engine light came on, now i figured it was cuz my filter was dirty but i cleaned it n still a problem, dont know if its cuz of that dirt or not. The engine runs fine, when the light came on i didnt notice a difference in performance (no black smoke). I know the code has to do with low volts to the o2 sensors just dont know what to do to fix the problem. Is there a way to trouble shoot or whatever with out having to replace 2 sensors. hard to think 2 would go just like that. i've had the codes cleared plenty of times but they come back on,mostly when u hammer on it.

I have an '85 Chrysler Fifth Avenue with 65,000 miles (which is why I haven't replaced it). Electrical system is working well after replacing battery, starter and alternator over the last few years. On occasion (usually when it's warm outside), I am not able to start my car. The engine will start to turn over but won't connect. After sitting for an hour it will typically start up without a problem What could be causing this?

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable that has sat in the driveway for about 2 1/2 months. It ran fine before with NO PROBLEMS at all. Now I go out to start it up and take it to get washed and it wouldn't turn over. After trying to jump it, I took the battery out and took it back to the store and found out it was dead. I bought a new one, replaced it and now it will turn over but it won't catch. I tried putting Heet in the tank and that didn't work. What should I do next?

Can anyone help me on this. My 1999 Maza Millenia car displayed Check Engine light on all of a sudden. I took to have this checked by a local mechanic who told me to take this to the dealer. Is this true and if it is is this very expensive to fix this. He mentioned that there could be something defective with the sensors. HELP with your answers is most appreciated.

I have a 1997 Mits Eclipse, RS, 4 cylinder; and after 10 years of having this baby, it's starting to act up. The problem is when I start my car, it starts up fine, but then as I start to reverse or drive off, it cuts out. When I do get it started and drive off, I have to keep my RPM over 1000 to keep the engine alive. When I come to a stop, the engine will cut off. Can anyone help me please? I know it's time for a new car, but I need to get this one fixed until I can get a new one.

I was wonding if anyone knew of a good salvage yard in the Detroit area, I was in a fender bender (literally) and need to find a driver side fender for my mustang. But all the ones I've called so far only have passenger side fenders. Ebay and all that is too expensive, so I'm hoping to pick one up locally. If anyone can help I appreciate it!

My husband accidentally side swiped my friend's car when coming out of the driveway. Our deductable is $500. The estimates are ranging from 900-1200. The problem is, will our insurance go up a lot if I report it? My husband has a clean record, no other accidents.
Thanks.
