most likely means you are low on oil, but can mean a broken oil pump :(

It could mean both! When your oil light comes on it means that your oil pump is laboring due to low oil level. Imagine a fish tank pump, or water pump running dry. Heres what to do. Open the hood, check your oil level, get two quarts of regular oil and add if needed, then schedule an oil and oil filter change. If you have severe lubrication failure, a good tech will inform you. Your engine will especially like synthetic oil . It costs alot more. I have a 8.1 ltre Chevy Avalanche and I use synthetic oil because its burns alot of oil. All 8.1 Vortec engines use alot of oil.. Its the same engine you'll get in an expensive Corvette. Depending on your vehicles oil burning (consumption) it is recommended to get an oil change between 3k and 5k miles (approx 4 months). If you drive alot in the city you'll need to change it less often than highway (high rpm) driving. Some oil lights come on too late. Hopefully this is not the case for you. When your vehicle slows down (braking), your oil light might come on due to the oil forced forward of the oil pump thus causing a dry moment. When you settle the oil light turns off. This is a first indication that you are getting low on oil. If you are sationary and the oil light is on , you need to pay emergency attention to the engines lubrication functions. Make sure the techs have tightened the drain plug and oil filter to specs. You'll know if they haven't because you'll drip oil. Watch for oil drops or puddles forming under you vehicle. Thanks, I hope this helps you and others. B
