I have a 1997 Mits Eclipse, RS, 4 cylinder; and after 10 years of having this baby, it's starting to act up. The problem is when I start my car, it starts up fine, but then as I start to reverse or drive off, it cuts out. When I do get it started and drive off, I have to keep my RPM over 1000 to keep the engine alive. When I come to a stop, the engine will cut off. Can anyone help me please? I know it's time for a new car, but I need to get this one fixed until I can get a new one.

OK. U R definitely right when you say you need a new car.
The cost of repairing this one would probably be better spent as a down-payment on another!
It sounds that you may need a cam shaft sensor, which really would involve a whole timing belt job. It might also be (believe it or not) your alternator or battery (less of a job), but somehow I don't think so.

it could be many things. sounds like maybe a sensor going bad or something. i recommend taking it to a mechanic. is the check engine light on? if so a mechanic can hook it up to a computer and find out for sure what the problem is. good luck!

I am sure that something is wrong with your car.
It might be a sensor.
It might need a tune up.
It might be the idle.
It's a foreign car and that's not good, it's going to cost you to take it in bbut you're royalty so use some of that royal money!!

If its like some cars I know, it would be the idle control valve. When it doesn't idle have someone knock the valve and see what happens. Other problems is intake leak.

Your car is an old piece of junk. Which makes your screen name even funnier, because you claim to 'be of royalty' and that's what you drive?

you could either have bad fuel or it could be a PCV valve. try adding water remover to your fuel tank or changing your PCV valve. these are both very simple and inexpensive to do. i hope this helps
