I have a 91 Pontiac Firebird 6 cyl. fuel injected, and a few months ago it started idling low, and as of a couple of days ago when i floor it, it doesnt have as much power as it did recently (it revvs to 3500 or 4000 instead of 5500 to redline. and now, shortly after i begin driving, the "service engine soon" light comes on, but when i shut it down, and start it again, it's off and its the same routine... any clues?

right I was driving down the motorway tonight when my car started to sway towards the left not under my control . I was in lane1 and doing 60 so breaked and still I kept swerving uncontrollably towards the right. I figured it was more than just the wind so stopped at the hard shoulder. I had one tyre replaced (replaced with a pirelli tyre) the other week..and although the same spec it is not the same make as the three tyres (alll bridgeford tyres). I attributed the loss of control of steering to this. However the sub contractor who came out drove my car to a works unit road and said my car was fine and I should get back on the motorway. Would you do that or insist on recovery truck to tow u home?
the sub contractor took it to a works slip road...drove it up and down the road....and said it was fine. but I did not think it was fine ....so AA after a huge fight towed me home...had to wait for another recovery vehicle

My sister bought a 2001 Celica GT back in July, but after driving it for a few weeks ended up getting a different car after a family member passed away. The Celica sat outside her apartment since then and until today hasn't been used. We decided to give the car to my fiance since hers recently broke down. When we went to start it however all it did was sit there and click, it wouldn't turn over. We thought either the battery had died or it was out of gas, so we added a little gas and jumped it. It started fine when we jumped it, so we drove it around the block a few times to recharge the battery. After stopping and turning the engine off though, it wouldn't start again. After some trial and error we've come to the realization that it will start fine when we're using jumper cables, but it just won't start on its own. Does this sound like a problem with the starter, or do we simply need to let the car run longer to let the battery recharge more. Any help would be greatly appreciated as w

***ONE: If a you're buying a used car with a good amount of miles: I heard if you replace the timing belt, the balance belt must (or really should) be replaced as well. Does this sound resonable? Obviously it's good to have everything you can replaced and upgraded, but let's talk common sense.

***TWO: Also, if I had a leak in two spots (I think crankshaft and camshaft) and they were replaced and on the receipt it says they were... my other mechanic says (without looking in the car) that not EVERYTHING was fixed there because apparently these two other parts shoulda also been replaced and since it wasn't on the receipt they weren't. Idk. I don't except you to understand this half of the question unless you are familiar with fixing the leaks yourself and know what I'm talking about (b/c I don't know and can't explain it any better).

Is it just to scare people and make money? If it is really necessary, why doesn't the Owner's Manual recommend it earlier? One example: the Owner's Manual recommends changing spark plugs at 100,00 miles or 88 months. My dealership says it should be done at 60,000 miles or 36 months. This is a huge difference. My car is 66 months old and has only 13,000 miles. I have had the oil changed regularly and the tires rotated, but they are pushing for $500 in maintenance. The tech said if I don't do it, the engine could seize up, which would be much more expensive. Thanks for any input.

'97 Dodge Grand Caravan died last week, lights went dim, wipers stopped working etc, battery light came on and van died. Had it towed, my mechanic tested the alternator and said it was good, battery was a little low on H2O, had it filled, cleaned connections...battery tested good. There was a loose tension rod and that was replaced along with the belt. Van ran fine for 3 days and now battery light is back on...any ideas? My mechanic thinks it could be the computer or a bad/loose wire, I really don't want to pay for a computer in this van if that is not what it is...any trouble shooting I can try myself, I am not very mechanically inclined ;-)
Thanks.

The car is a Nissan Altima. Pretty much when I bought it someone had put the lug nuts on backwards before me. I drove the car for a couple thousand miles. I went to sears to try to get my tires replaced. Before they even started on my car the guy told me that the lug nuts were put backwards on the wheel. He said the steel wheel has to be replaced as well as the lug nuts. He said depending on the situation the steel studs may have to be replaced to. He told me that the wheel holes gets crossed or something like that. I removed the lug nuts at home and found the hole where the taper end of the nut goes into appears pretty good condition. Each hole was raised up like normal. I put all of them back properly and they fit well. I don't know if the wheel has to be replaced or not. Is he just yanking my chain!!!!!

I just took my Clio 182 for its first service at 18 months, and 12,000 miles. Before the service according to the trip computer, I consistantly got 34.5 mpg. In the 150 miles I have done since the service, I have only managed 31.5 mpg. Has anyone else experienced this? Is therea logical explanation, or has the garage done something wrong?

One thing I have heard mentioned in the past by mechanics that car's, notably cars that were made in the eighties by american auto makers were engineered....to break down after a certain milelage...usually around 100K miles. Can anyone verfiy this or is this rumor just a product of the piss-poor automobiles produced in that era?
