You need to have grounding wires to ground the engine. If you do not have these, electricity that is trying to get back to the battery can ruin a lot of stuff. There have been documented cases where bearings in the engine have welded themselves together.

Only if you want the vehicle to run. The alternator and battery are grounded to the engine, and most everything else is grounded to the frame, so if you don't have a good connection between the two, your electricals won't work worth doodoo.

Yes. Both the engine and frame are used for ground return paths, so they must both be bonded to the battery ground terminal.

I helped a guy fix his Fiat starting problem after he inadvertantly forgot to hook the ground cable up to the motor. The choke cable was glowing red when he was cranking the starter. It seems those wire wrapped choke cables aren't of a sufficient amperage rating.
