Im thinking of getting a 1996 VW golf, but it has that kind of problem, and I was wondering how much it would be to fix that, and by the way what's a transmission flush?

Anyone who knows old cars.
I have a 1978 AMC Concord.When it's running it makes a popping noise ( pop!.....pop!..... pop!) and the more I excellerate-- the faster it pops ( poppoppoppop!)<<------ sound effects...heh.
Also,if I don't stay on the gas it'll most likely shut off -- like when I'm at a red light or stop sign......

One guy told me it might have a loose valve or something wrong with the push rod. I have no idea.Does anyone have a clue what it could be??

BTW......the alt light stays on if that might help. The battery is good 'cause I checked it by unhooking the cables while the car was running.

I'd appreciate any help I can get with this.
Thanks :(

On my cars information panel, the light *air bag* is on. It is a old car with over 250k miles. Is it important, or is it just a loose wire or something minor like that? Any ideas?

Our fairly well maintained (at 175K miles) 1998 Ford Escort (2.0 Split Port Engine) was just serviced and passed California smog. Recently (less then 5000 miles) the timing belt failed and was replaced. Now suddenly the car only marginally starts and makes a loud clanging noise from the top of the engine. If you give it gas it does seem like igniton happens but the noise is so bad you wouldn't want to let it run. It sounds like a super loud diesel engine. This is all while the car is in park, so I assume it isn't a transmission problem. All the fluids are good, it doesn't look damaged and the oil seems to be oil, and coolant is coolant. It's been a good car that I want to keep, but I wonder if maybe it's run it's course? Obviously the problem is serious, but keep the car serious? Or not? Any thoughts from those who might know better on the problem? Or the history of high mileage Ford Escorts?

I bought the car used a few months ago. I drive 20 miles to and from work each day, and overall it's been a great car. It had been running fine, but now there are some slight problems.

1) When I turn on the air in any way shape or form, a strange odor comes from the vents.

2) The thermostat keeps on indicating that my car is overheating, so when I turn on the heat full blast (and bear with the smell) to take some of the heat off the engine, it says it lowers the temp, but it then fluxs. It's never constant. The thermostat had been constant low until last week.

3) Sometimes when I apply the brakes, I hear a small squeal - this does not happen all the time.

I have a small budget at the moment, and don't have the money to buy a brand new car, nor to buy all new parts to repair whatever may be wrong with my car.

If you know what could possibly be wrong with my car and how I can get it fixed, your help would be greatly appreciated!

Lately, when I turn the key to crank the engine and start my car, it seems to take longer than usual. Granted, I know that I need an oil change, but am not sure if this can be a cause for the problem. The car is still fairly new (2001) and doesn't seem like it should be acting like this. Can there be any other cause to this problem beyond a need for an oil change?

If there's a chance that a part will need to be replaced, might anyone have an idea as to how much this will cost me?
