Is car in park or neutral. Is engine to be hot or cold. Running or off.

If you pull the dipstick out, wipe it off and read the dipstick.

Park.
Hot.
Running.

Car has to be either in Park or Neutral. Your choice. Engine has to be warmed up, and thus it has to be running.
