Its the lever attached to the brake & by turning a bolt on that lever you can increase or decrease the braking resistince for the type of driving you plan to do for instance you would want to tighten them up if you planned on driving in an area with steep grades

I am a truck driver and can tell you that if you don't even know what slack adjusters are you will never pass the air brakes test let alone the other tests. You need to go to a trucking school or find a friend with a truck that is willing to show you everything there is to know. The CDL is very simple to take ,but only after learning every detail hands on.

Hi everyone, I am looking at the same question on page 5-15 and the CDL Guide has a horrible explanation on page 5-11. It's difficult to wrap your mind around the explanation in the book.

slack adjusters take the slack out of your air brakes and if you dont know what they are you should reread the air brakes part of the driving book cause that for me was the hardest part of the whole test and practice your walk around inspection again
( and i dont mean to sound like an *** just trying to be helpful)

the slack adjusters are the rods from the air brake pods to the brake actuator cam in the wheels, they have an adjustment screw to loosen or tighten the brakes, if the brakes are loose and not stopping properly you adjust this rod or arm to take up the slack on the actuator cam
