I left work this evening and everything was fine. I made a stop and when I started the truck back up and stopped at the first stop sign, my breaks were not working for the most part. I was able to get stopped, but it feels like there is air in the lines and I have to "floor" the breaks. I checked the fluid and it is fine. Why would they stop working just like that?

I had some repairs done two months ago. Power steering fluid had leaked all over the crankshaft seal and I had to have my rack and pinion replaced as well as the seal because the fluid made it too soft. There was some kind of a pressure leak that caused a high pitch noise. (This is why I initially took it in, that and the power steering was failing intermittently)

The car started making a funny noise the other day and both belts were thrown off. The Harmonic balancer was up against the firewall.

It seems to me that the harmonic balancer was not torqued down properly when the repairs were done. Does this sound right?

For those who don't know, it is a car powered entirely by electricity, developed by Thomas Edison. It had a range of up to 500 miles, and was capable of speeds up to 90MPH, which was faster than the gasoline powered cars produced in that era.

Why, if they were capable of making it in the 1920s and '30s, are we not capable of making it now, 70 years later? I would imagine that we could make it even better!

Nener experienced this with any other car I've owned. I do not 'ride' the brakes. Both pads and rotors had to be replaced. The outer pads were not worn down anywhere near as bad as the inner pads.

My mother said that her old car when she was a kid could go further on a tank of gas than newer ones do now. And auto manufacturers make cars use more gas on purpose...is this true?
