Yeah, that would be a sign. If the engine is running or revving, but the car doesn't move like it should when in gear...that's a bad tranny. Or torque converter.

I had a friend who's transmission was so bad, he had to race the engine (4000rpm) just to get the car to move at all.

Well, I've had several transmissions go out on me and each time, the symptoms were pretty similar. It would shift hard...and I do mean HARD. Like a jerky, whiplash inducing shift. There were also intermittent delays in response. For example, I would put it in drive, hit the gas and it would take 30 seconds or so for the transmission to engage and move the car. Also, I would occasionally have a difficult time actually shifting from park to drive, etc. The lever would actually stick and it would require quite a bit of force to move it into the appropriate location.

How many miles? Your whining noise could be an automatic issue. When an automatic goes bad it will start slipping before it starts whining. You know it is slipping when you mash the gas, but your vehicle takes as long as 15 - 30 seconds to respond and the engine will be running at higher than normal RPMs. ...but in a RWD vehicle it can also come from the carrier bearing of the driveshaft (if it has these your drive shaft will be in "halves"...a front portion to the tranny and a rear portion to the differential). On the driveshaft there are also universal joints which can also make a similar noise, but when these go bad you can hear the drive shaft clunking the bottom of the vehicle. Your best bet is to take it to the shop and have them do a diagnostic.

Not makin it up a hill is one symptom.Does it take a second or two to change from park to drive? That's a symptom and if it's the tranny then reverse will go first. It might just need servicing.

My Taurus didn't move at all when the transmission went. It gave no warning, just went. It took the Ford dealer 3 attempts and 3 weeks to make the transmission work properly. Glad I got rid of that car. Good luck

syptoms #1-3

#1 when your driving down the road and it skips and switches to neutral it feels like it skips from neutral then kicks back in.

#2 pull out ur transmission dip stick and look to see if it's red or dark brown. If it's violet red more likely your trans is good.
if it's brown your gears are burning up.
or smell the dip stick and if it smells burnt then your trans gears are burning.

#3 Go to a transmission shop and have them drop the trans. pan
and check to see on the bottom of the pan for any loose metal pieces. if u have metal pieces on the bottom of the pan that indicates your transmission is starting to go.

Hope i helped

There could be many signs of a bad trans, If it was so bad that the car would not go up hill it would also be slipping at other times. Does your car lose power as it goes up the hill? Seems to run OK in traffic but on long trips starts to lose power? If yes check the catalytic converter. If it plugs it robs power.

Quite often when i have a customer with problems going uphill it ends up being a fuel filter. aside from it being a common problem, it is very inexpensive to replace a filter. If it works.. great you don't have to shell out 400 bucks to get tranny rebuilt.
