I have a 1987 dodge dakota. For some reason my battery is not charging. I have purchased a new battery I replaced the alternator then took it back had them test it and then replaced it with a new one that I had tested before I bought it and I know it it works. I've checked the fuses. What's wrong I just don't understand???

You might have a short in your electrical system somewhere that is draining the battery. have you done any electrical work on the vehicle recently? I.E. installed a new radio, upgraded head/tail light, etc. Also check all of your fuses and make sure there isn't one that is blown which could be creatring an overload on another component in the vehicle, which in turn might be keeping the battery from charging as a safety precaution.

Most older Dodge, Chrysler products use a voltage regulator that is NOT built into the alternator. You need a volt meter & wiring diagram to troubleshoot. The regulator is a small box 2" tall,
2" deep, 4" long, it has one 4 or 5 wire plug-in that is flat across the front. Most are located on fender-well or firewall. Most are marked as to wire functions. It controls alternator output by monitoring battery/system voltage, and activating/energizing the field coils in the alternator. Which in turn produces output voltage.
Good Luck!

Check or replace the wire going from alternator to battery.

The second...that's right second....regulator is in the computer. I'd say call your Dodge dealer, but the mechanics these days don't know anything. I'd try the computer. Junkyards usually have them for 25 bucks. Cheaper then buying a new one. Especially if it's a more complicated problem.

It was made by Chrysler and, it's 20 years old! That's the short answer of what's wrong! You could probably find a 10 year old car that would cost less to fix than your Dodge! Douchebag!
