fuel means anything which acts as a energy source. Petrol (or Gasoline as the US calls it), Diesel, Ethanol, Propane, Natural Gas, Solar, Coal, Wood, Oil, etc.. are all considered fuels. If you can release energy from something by changing its state, it is a fuel.
