My dad passed away a few months ago. My step mom tells me that creditors are claiming she is responsible for the debt he owed in his name. This is in the state of Texas. They did not jointly go in on these accounts and only my fathers social security number was tied to his credit card (he owed 11k) and a 2k loan for a piano. Can they really do this? Thanks for the answers.

Within the last six months, Capital One has raised hundreds of thousands of people's interest rates on their cards--some by 50% or more--without their knowledge. I only found out that mine had gone up after I had carefully read my statement 3 months after the fact. Because they didn't notify me, the "opt-out" period expired and I am stuck with the ridiculous rate.
Has this happened to you? Tell me about it. And please go here https://capitalone.questus.com/CAP140/ru/cap140_s/index.asp
to tell Capital One that you will never be a customer again. Let's be heard!
Capital One is ripping off each and every one of you who has a card!
What have you done to avoid or deal with your rate increase? (Most people have, like me, never paid late or been over the limit.)
CAPITAL ONE SUCKS! Let's unite to stop this juggernaut!

I hear it takes about 3 weeks to receive the credit card. I've seen posts on here that people sign up with as little as $99 and get a $500.00 limit. How does that happen? Did anyone do anything "special" in the process? I also hear that the card can convert in 6 months with good payment. Please confirm. One more thing can you really add more money to your deposit? I guess the best way to do this is to get a savings account with BOA and then have them take the money from that account?

Thanks much.

If so is there a fee for doing so? Is it advisable to do so? Thanks in advance for those who take the time to reply.

Can an individual eliminate credit card debt by declaring bankruptcy? I didn't think you could wipe it out, just get the bill collectors off your back. But, someone told me that it depends on which chapter of bankruptcy you use. The right one WILL eliminate credit card debt. I know someone who has $80,000 in credit card debt and they are trying to do that to get rid of that debt! Is it really possible? Are there any restrictions in doing this. Can you ever get a credit card again if you do it?

I heard that if you send them a check and write on the back ("accepting this check is evidence that the transaction is complete and this charge will deleted from my credit") Is this considered a written contract in colorado and do they have to stand behind it? Will they delete it from your credit report?

I'm reposting, hopefully it will be less confusing. I had a tuition debt go into collections. I lost my job and moved to another state. I had to keep my out of state bank account open so my previous employer could deposit my severance pay. I agreed to pay $2500 @ $200/month. The agency debited the $ on the 15th of the month for 5 months. I received my severance pay in early March. I asked the agency if I could make my March payment early and for them not to debit $ on the 15th as I'd be opening a new account in a local bank. They agreed $ I was clear not to withdraw $ on the 15th. They rec'd their payment on the 13th. I opened my new account and transferred all but $100 into it. I left $100 in it in case I needed $ until the funds cleared at my new bank. They attempted to debit $200 on the 15th, 16th & 17th of March. I was hit with an insufficient funds fee at $30/ attempt. When I questioned them about it they demanded the full amount. I paid this debt in full, could I get my $90 back?

Please help anyone! I have posted questions on this before.

My solicitors are telling me all that can be done is get a certificate of satisfaction for a mistake that they made, that resulted in a judgement against me (they basically didn’t pay on time, after a car accident). I want to see if there is SOMETHING/ANYTHING that can be done, to make them go through the painful process of reversing this judgement.

They are telling me nothing can be done. My credit rating file now has this, and I’m willing to go to any length to get it removed.

Any legal brains – help!!!!!

I have a friend that needs to clean up debt. Before charging off to be a hero and completely opening a can of worms on her poor soul by referring her to any joe shmo I wanted to ask. I need to ask because cleaning up credit debt that has lay dormant for years is a tricky situation. The debts have been sold off and as soon as you make contact with the collection agencies all of a sudden the clock starts again and all he// breaks loose.

So...we have BK lawyers, credit counselors, financial advisers, etc so which ones are going to truly assist credit debt payoff strategy and report cleanup with my friend's best interest at heart?

I am helping a friend with this issue. And they inccurred lots of credit card debt back in college and then blew it off. Totally blew it off for over 9 years. When I learned of this I told my friend they won't forget the debt - they sold it to someone. However - I have learned that the debt should drop off the report after 7 years typically. Some debts do not show up as charge off and some show recent activity - like going to a collection agency. What gives on the 7 yr drop off thing then? Do not want to open a can of worms here - and wish to settle debt at some point. Is cleaning up credit report separate to that or not?

Apparently, its an AmEx business credit card and both the previous owner's name and the business name is associated with it. I had purchased the business, but the previous owner did not fully disclose his debt.
