Do not pay it. If it's been on there from 2001, it should be falling off within the next year or you can dispute it, askin the credit bereau to remove it due to the account being so old. You still will owe the bill, but it will drop off of your credit report. Don't bother paying now, bc if you do it will fall off the same time, it's scheduled to fall off without payment.

It will stay on your credit report for 7 years and 180 days from the date of last activity (DOLA). This is usually the date the account is 30 days past due or charged off.

Paying the bad debt does not restart the 7 year reporting period. Nor can the creditor or collection agencies re-age it to keep it on your credit report.

Falling off the credit report does not mean collectors will stop trying to collect the debt. They can and probably will. They can take you to court and get a judgment which will be reported on your credit report for 10 years and can be renewed.

It takes about 3-7 years. Then it may not be removed from there. You should check your credit report for free and see how long they appear. Most likely the bills have no reflection on judgements for you buying things.

Seven years but this can be extended if the company keeps reporting on it and trying to collect it. Still, sounds like you might be getting there.
