Only if you want to rent a car . Most other places will take a debit card or check although that can be a hassle .

Personally , properly managed , you make $$$ using a credit card . I paid zero % during the last 5 years and have gotten about $1000 in rebates .
(But this only works if you pay off the entire balance EVERY month )

It really depends on your lifestyle or job requirements. If you travel, especially for business, a credit card is essential.

You put all the hotel, airline, car rental, meals, etc on the credit card and float it for a month. This allows time to turn in receipts and get reimbursement for the expenses in time to pay the credit card. Thus you don't tie up your cash.

It's even better when you use a cash back reward card.

If not a credit card at least a debit with a visa logo. Mainly for emergencies but also for your credit. It's hard to have good credit without at least having one. If you can't get approved for a regular credit card, try a gas card they are reasonably easy to get. The trick is to pay of anything you charge at the end of the month. Be responsible and you will reap the benefits of having plastic.

It is very important, because you need credit to build credit. You can't get any type of loans if you don't have any history of credit. Debit cards, and credit cards are not the same thing. Credit cards are a line of credit that is extended to you from a bank, and if you do good on your payoff, you are extended an increase in credit. Debit cards is a card that you are using to to spend your own money that you have in your bank account. Trust me there is a difference.

Since bank debit cards have came out, it is not as essential as it has been in the pass. Few businesses are willing to take a check, especially an out of time check for major purchases. A debit or credit card is essential for getting a hotel reservation, air line reservations, emergency purchases when out of to town--towing and auto repair(tires, general break-down), on-line purchases, and etc.
