I am a full time student in college I also work full time as a receptionist. I love my job because there is definitely opportunity for advancement. I also love it because although the phones are heavy in between I sit and study. I am a temp until further notice of the other receptionist who most likely isn’t coming back because she is older and recovering from 2 recent bran hemorages. She has 3 months and could ask for more leave. I will hear in about a month. There is a position that will open in about a week. It is very stressful, higher pay but between school and work I wont have time for nothing else. Should I risk losing my position (that could open up) which I am unstable at but happy or should I apply for the more secure but stressful one?

We have to share an office. She talks on her phone all day, and if she isn't talking her phone is ringing at top notch volume with an annoying ringtone.
She eats junk food non-stop all day and it grosses me out, she yells when she talks, she's negative. She has lengthy conversations with other co-workers in our ofice while I am trying to work.
Going to the boss will do no good, as he already has one foot out of the door here. She has been here for 4 years, I have been here for 1 year.
What on earth can I do? It's driving me insane.

I took a reporting job knowing that my boss has a reputation for being slave driver.

It's true, but this is my first reporting job and I would like to make my troubles worthwhile.

I'm more than a month into it, and I figure at least six months will look decent on a resume. I moved away for this gig, and I miss my boyfriend. Sometimes I think that makes me hate this job more.

But really - we work up to 12 hours a day and I never have time for a life. I'm miserable. How can I stay motivated to report, write and do a good job when I hate it so much?

I know that I have to have good qualifications if I want to get a good job. But is being too qualified for a job seen as a bad thing? Will they want to hire me if I have the stuff not ot just work in that department, but to run it? What do employers think when they see someone who could get a better job somewhere else but is applying for something below their abilities?

I make 115k a year, plus benefits - including 401k at 7% match and potential bonus (probably 10%). I also get 17 vacation days + holidays. My commute is less than 20 minutes each way. I work 40 - 45 hours a week.

I was offered a 3+ year consulting job at 90/hr but I would have to be an S-Corporation. No benefits or anything and the commute would be 1 hour and 45 minutes each way. I would most likely work 45 - 50 hours a week.

I'm having a hard time comparing both. Most formulas I found online are simplified and don't take benefits into account. I'm thinking non-401k compensation is around 20k. Add 7k for 401k match. I would have to pay double Soc Security taxes - which I think would add another 10k(??). If I add all that up, my total comp is around 152k. 90/hr with comparable time off is close to 172k minimum.

20k for 3 hours more a day commuting doesn't sound worth it. Are my numbers above off? I know that if I do put in 50 hours per week - I'm approaching 200k.

I would love to become a thatcher and maybe one day have my own little business. As I live in a fairly rural area (south Dorset) I am sure there are thatchers locally, but what should I do?

Is the best course of action simply to call one up and say, 'I want to become a thatcher but have no experience, can I work for you?' or will the thatcher assume I will learn the trade and then set up shop next door to him/ her?

Thanks

For them to keep on record as a coworker recently had a seizure. I take Ritalin for ADHD, and would rather not disclose this because my job performance has never been subpar, and don't want to open myself up to ridcule or closer than normal scrutiny.
Do I have to do this?

I think they're annoying because

1. They have taken jobs away from British people

2. They are very hard to understand and for them to understand us

Barclaycard announced today their Manchester call center is closing with the loss of 600 jobs and is being moved to.......... INDIA!!!! Thes banks are making obscene profits and are turning their back on the British workforce in the name of more profit!

I will try to boycott companies who use Indian call centers in futute for this reason
