I would love to become a thatcher and maybe one day have my own little business. As I live in a fairly rural area (south Dorset) I am sure there are thatchers locally, but what should I do?

Is the best course of action simply to call one up and say, 'I want to become a thatcher but have no experience, can I work for you?' or will the thatcher assume I will learn the trade and then set up shop next door to him/ her?

Thanks

Since you live rurally, ask about in your local town or village, the pub is a good place since the patrons seem to know everything about everyone. ha-ha I am certain that someone will know a thatcher or of one (or look in the phone book or on-line.) To the best of my knowledge, thatching is a trade that requires an apprenticeship. Once you find a thatcher, I would recommend calling him and explaining your interest and inquiring about what you need to do to become one. He may not need an apprentice but may know someone who does. He can certainly point you in the right direction.

As far as what assumptions he will make, I can't answer that. He may be looking for someone to train to take over once he retires, you never know.

You are in the right area, keep your eyes open and when you see a thatcher at work stop and talk to him, explain your interest and see if he can direct you in the direction of a possible apprenticeship, I don't believe you need worry about competition, thatchers are a dying breed' so keep the flag flying.......Good luck.

Ask Maggie. No seriously ring them up and be honest, tell them you have no experience but are keen to learn and will work hard. Ask to be given a chance on a weeks trial and then they will know if you are suitable and you will find out if you really like it.
Best of luck.
