Don't burn bridges. If you leave without notice, it leaves a bad impression on your current employer. If you give proper notice, written, respectfully to your supervisor, you can use it on your next job. AND, what if, (you must consider this), you cannot find a job and want/need to return to the job you left without notice. Guess what??? I'd bet they wouldn't hire you back!!!
In addition, you are hurting your coworkers as well and WHAT IF (don't you just hate those) one of those coworkers is in a management position in a place you REALLY want to work at (in the future) and he/she remembers you LEFT them high and dry!!!

Quiting outright doesn't bode well for anyone. For example; if you work in a business that talks to other like business or live in a small town, word of mouth may come back to nip you in the butt. Also, somewhere down the road you might need or even want to work with someone you may have offended by quitting and, what if the opportunity came up to go back to work for the company you are planning to leave? There are a lot of negatives to just quitting.
On the flip side, There isn't a company in the world that wouldn't show you the door today if, they did not want you to work there! Many don't care about unemployment benefits and your feelings. It's all about return on investment. You also might want to consider the fact that they may show you the door the minute you quit. Many employers don't want soon to be ex-employees hanging around.
So, here's the deal. If you are working at a drive through hamburger place, give them a few days and bug out. If you are working in your career job, talk with the owner, HR or whoever is in charge. Let them know you are prepared to stay a few extra days but have your mind set on leaving and want to do it in a dignified but logical way.
Good Luck.

if you do not give notice they may give you a bad reference- if you give proper notice then they can't really be too upset with you unless you were a bad employee.
