I am seeking employment and have a fabulous reference from my employer from 1 year ago (laid off). I was with another company for most of last year and quit due to scheduling conflicts and carpal tunnel syndrome. I loved my job and did it well. A prospective employer recently called to say I got a glowing reference from 1st employer, but my most recent said they needed me to sign a waiver before they'd give a reference. I was a shoo in for the job, but didn't get it after the second reference. This has happened several times since. What can I do about a (suspected) bad reference - especially one that I believe is unqualified?

I have an interview (project) that is due pretty soon, for a class I'm taking. (It's Psyc103) I have to interview someone over 40, with at least a Master's degree. My goal here is to come up with 30 or more interesting questions to ask this person about career and self. The person I'm interviewing is my aunt-in-law. She's a nurse practioner. Just so ya know. I have about 16 questions and now I'm sitting here, dazed at the page. Any ideas please share-I'm stuck and wanna make it good or at least funny. Thanks in advance.

I have been joining Toastmasters for about 8 months. It was fun and engaging, and I know that my public speaking improves. But unless you work in the field where you constantly do formal talking (lawyer, salesman, PR), how does Toastmasters experience help you in your job?

I started new job in a small PR firm a wk ago&already I'm having sleepless nights cos of the stress. I'm in the company in an admin role bt am going to be trained up in PR. It is a whole bunch of small things such as:
-There is no lunch break - have 2 make excuse like I need 2 go 2 bank so I get a small break.
-can't space an e-mail wrong, write best wishes instead of best regards or (as I did) introduce yourself in an e-mail saying your name & that you're new.
-expected to minute meetings on 2nd day without a proper brief about who client is etc.
-no training
-I've been told 2 wear make-up! (i'm only 27, with quite sensitive skin¬ that bad looking!)
-no talking unless its work related - can't ask colleagues about wkend etc. first thing!
-moved office round as ask last fri (did gd job2!)-her comment was that I hadn't emptied bins!
-left in office on own all day in first wk.
-you can't make mistakes!

i'm no slacker, have degree, been a deputy manager 4 nearly 4 yrs!!

I have been accepted to a graduate program Molecular Genetics and at the same time I have been accepted to a Doctor of Physical Therapy professional program. I love both sides, however, I have to choose a career pathway that is rewarding and have a future. I heard that a lot of PhD candidates even those with science Ph D's get lower paying jobs, sometimes less than $30,000 a year; while the majority of graduates spend extra 5-7 years as post graduates making just about $35,000 a year. I don't wanna spend 5-6 years in school, specially in a vigorous PhD career, and end up making less than an average associate degree graduate. On the other hand, with Physical therapy, unlike Graduate school where you get paid a stipend while pursuing your degree, a huge student loan of about $70,000 awaits you after graduation.

Anyone with an advice? As I have mentioned, I love both careers just need to pick the best one.

I have to mention it, but I need a positive tactful way of doing so. I don't want them to find out via fingerprinting.

I'm not good at speaking , maybe i have some mental problem with language because i'm 27 and never could speak well. I try to say something but i can't pronounce it. So , often i say something and people dont understand me. So i started this office job and they told me today to answer the phoenes, i did, and i had trouble
....it was fine but my speaking style is kind of like kiddish because i'm not a talkative person. i'm quiet and generally i say short phrases. Well they were happy with my phoning but as i veiw it, i sucked.

how can i improve? i mean, i've used the phone alot but when it comes time to say something i get tongue tied or stuff. And it's not shyness.

I work as a programmer, and I heard of one person at work who is able to telecommute 4/5 days of the week. So I became curious about how telecommuting is perceived across all industries. I would love to get away from my claustrophobic cube. What kinds of jobs lend themselves to telecommuting? Any other jobs besides computer programming types?

I'd love to migrate to web development. Are there ample telecommute job opportunities in web development?
