I started new job in a small PR firm a wk ago&already I'm having sleepless nights cos of the stress. I'm in the company in an admin role bt am going to be trained up in PR. It is a whole bunch of small things such as:
-There is no lunch break - have 2 make excuse like I need 2 go 2 bank so I get a small break.
-can't space an e-mail wrong, write best wishes instead of best regards or (as I did) introduce yourself in an e-mail saying your name & that you're new.
-expected to minute meetings on 2nd day without a proper brief about who client is etc.
-no training
-I've been told 2 wear make-up! (i'm only 27, with quite sensitive skin¬ that bad looking!)
-no talking unless its work related - can't ask colleagues about wkend etc. first thing!
-moved office round as ask last fri (did gd job2!)-her comment was that I hadn't emptied bins!
-left in office on own all day in first wk.
-you can't make mistakes!

i'm no slacker, have degree, been a deputy manager 4 nearly 4 yrs!!

I can only comment on British law, but if that's where you are and what you say is accurate then this company is breaking employment law with the break thing.
Go to the citizen's advice bureau and they will advise you of your rights, then see your boss and present them with what you have found. If they still refuse to change anything and you can show they are breaking the rules then you can take it further or just leave. Get a copy of your contract and check what that says as well.

Girl, you have my sympathy. I had a job last year where I spent the whole first day hearing about the rules.

No eating at your desk
Take VERY good notes
Don't ask a question twice
Read the instructions every time you do a task, even if you do it all day every day.
So many meetings, you couldn't get work done.
Don't think for yourself, just follow instructions.

Don't even get me started on e-mail. If I handled that wrong, it was a federal offense and I was in somebody's office with the door closed being lectured that this can NEVER happen again.

I could go on. I lasted 7 months before I turned in my notice.
I took a pay cut at my new job, but I'm way happier.

Follow your gut feeling. Good luck!

Somebody hasn't discussed their expectations with you. I suggest you have a heart-to-heart with the boss and get a better understanding of what is expected and how things should work. I hope you will be given the opportunity to express your own concerns as well.

I tend to think this is more a case of mis-communication of expectations and perhaps a less-than-perfect overall communication situation. And, too, it could be a test. Some people don't know how to be leaders in these smaller companies. I think sometimes that's why the company is still small, even after being in business a number of years.

So put your game-face on, and see what you can learn. If worse comes to worst, you were looking when this job came along.

Well, number one broken rule on her part....no lunch break. You must be allowed even a short break while working a minimum 5 hour shift. She sounds as though she doesn't know anything about interpersonal skills, which you are going to have to get used to, or try to break it to her gently that she is acting like a complete b**ch. Grow hard skin, stick it out, and it may turn out great, but do look into your allowable break times, as it is law that employers must give employees breaks. And as for the make-up? Tell her to stuff herself.

Your boss is a joke. Find out how long your predecesor was there which should give you an idea of whether its personal or not.- No hint of discrimination by any chance?
Always remember, you spend most of your life working and sleeping so if you don't enjoy the work, get out. Money doesn't count higher than your health and pleasure.
Good luck.

I'd go and go quickly
I faced down a boss like that and it has been a long slog
If you stay you've got to be prepared to take this for a long time before any signs of getting better
Sounds like you need to find the job pages and move-on
Best wished for finding somewhere better and soon

The more specious the line of work the worse the people. Find a job doing something that matters to humanity and get away from these self centered parasites.

I had a job that I knew wasn't for me from day one. I thought I would get used to it but I never did. Spent 8 months being miserable before I jacked and found something better. You are legally entitled to breaks by the way.

Sue them, you *must* have a lunch break, and what's that "no talking" thing?

It's against the law to put somebody to that amount of pressure and giving nothing in return.

Sounds like bullying to me. If you manage to do a bit of digging you will probably find they have a high level of staff turnover.

This lot sound so uptight and need to relax.
