I pulled up my free annual credit report and noticed a collection agency listed for about $400. I called about it and it is for Time Warner Cable. When I moved out of my old apartment and cancelled service they told me to leave my DVR box with the leasing office and they would pick it up. Well apparently they didnt or did not give me credit for returning it and charged me over $400 for the equipment that I did not return.

Does anyone have experience on this happening before? What are the chances of the credit agency negotiating a settlement for less than $400? Or am I stuck here?

I think it may be that they tend to be under less pressure than private companies to generate revenues to stay in business. It's more slow paced in government sector, and sometimes it gets tearfully boring, but that may just be my experience.

I have a real passion for the environment and animals. For the longest time I've tried so hard to find a career that would do some good for the world. I just finished an ecology course and I loved it. I found it interesting and I understood it. I also just scored 99% on my test and I didn't study at all. Usually I have to study a lot to get that kind of mark. My question is what are some careers that involve ecology?

I have no problem with banner ads - just don't have sound. If you must have sound, make it at least interesting.

My husband worked for his uncle in 2004. He was paid cash and never received a stub. He was an employee as far as we were concerned. He used his uncle's tools, drove his uncle's work truck and was dicated to by his uncle when/where/how work was to be done. His uncle filed a 1099 for him and after many discussions with the IRS we were told there was nothing we could do since we kept no records of earnings or expenses. We paid all the penalties and fees and spend 2 years in debt with the IRS. Is there anyway to fight this now that it is paid off and get our money back? Should we even try?

I was scheduled off today. I made plans to go out of town. This morning the office girl calls, leaves me a message, and asks if I can come in. I called back and told her I wasn't able to. A couple of hours later, work calls again. I didn't answer right away. It was my manager this time. He left me a message saying that if I didn't call him back, my hours might substantially be lowered in the weeks to come. I called him back, and he accuses me on the phone of screening my calls. I politely explained to him I was out of town with a friend (at this point I was), and I apologized for not being able to come into work. He said he was just wondering why I couldn't come in.

My thinking is that what I do on my day off is my business, and that I shouldn't have to be around my phone to answer it right away. Can he really threaten to reduce my hours if I don't come in on my day off? Are there any laws against this kind of retaliation? I live in Arkansas if that helps.

My former boss, Michael R H***es recently interviewed 3 of us in my current department for a sales position. I dressed to the nines for both the 1st and 2nd interview, and was very confident and concise (avoided ums, uhs) and gave a really good interview. He made almost no eye contact and made derogatory comments to me in both the interview and feedback session. I had said that I needed work on a specific area and he said it back as if I didn't know anything about sales or my current role. I am far from perfect, but he was also demeaning of me on my year end review, and I had to fight like hell to get my current position; in fact every person I talked to on the team of 30 or so people said I had shown that I deserve the job. I no longer work for him, but my question really is, how to deal with such a slimy person? He is making his hiring decisions on favorites rather than qualifications, and has a blatant history of doing so.

I don't think its slum lord - I think those are crappy landlords who don't maintain their properties. But what is the deal with landlords who rent to anyone/don't evict when tenants are a nuisance. Why should tenants who pay on time suffer because there is one or two tenants who can't live like normal human beings. And it happens everywhere - inner city to affluent suburbs. So why do landlords of apartment, condo, and townhouse communities rent to people who are constantly disturbing their neighbors? Police get called over and over and still the landlords refuse to take action. They have better things to do then babysit rental units for landlords. I know that many landlords (especially with multiple properties) make a ton of cash so are they just greedy? I'm all for helping those less fortunate who need a place to stay, but not at the expense of hardworking people.

Hello,

I am as of this month a new homeowner! Yay. I have a question, I know that at the end of the year you can write of the taxable interest you have paid that year (only some but not all). My question is can I write off the up front costs I paid to get the mortgage? I did 0% down and still had to put down about $2,000. Thanks.

I am planning on moving to a one bedroom apartment that is small. At first the water was included into the rent now it is not. I might asked if the rent can be adjusted.

If the rate is $1.87 for the first 15 ccf and over 15 ccf at 2.85 with a meter size of 5/8 inch and a base rate of 10.90? what is normal average amount the bill should be? Not sure how much cooking I would be doing with water and how often I would flush the toilet. If I took a 15 minute shower (not bath) for 30 days with a low grade shower head (one that doesn't spew out a lot of water)

When you flush the toilet is sewage everything that goes down the toilet besides the water? Is sewage also anything that goes down the drain or garbage disposal besides the water?

If you live alone and aren't expecting any guests is it ok not to flush sometimes (only if its #1 not #2).

If you place a half gallon jug in the toilet bin behind where you sit to displace water does it really save money?

I just graduated with a degree in communications and a minor in writing. I thought I wanted to do something in the journalism field. But I realized now after $100k in tuition that it's not what I want to do. What types of jobs can i do with this degree. I was very involved in school, from student govt. to the university judicial board, ski club, marketing association... What are some good jobs that would pay well and that I would be able to move up quickly in.

Well i just got a job, i filled out all of the paperwork, and took a urine test. And my employer didn't really tell me what the salary was. I still have to go through the training process, ( the job is cashier at The Food Emporium) and that can take a week.

Ummm, i want to get an affordable apartment, Section 8 to be exact. every time i get paid i'm not gonna spend anything except for the money i take out to get back and forth to work, and being that people are greedy in my house ( living with parents and others) i dont want to keep money on me.

I need to know what i should do with my money so that when i do get accepted for the apartment, i have money to pay them and go shopping for furniture and so on.

Should i open a bank account to hold my money there?
I thought about that but i'm scared that money will be takin out of it somehow and i don't think i can deal with that, but i just need a place to put my money so that it is safe until i come and get it, whenever i need it.
