My former boss, Michael R H***es recently interviewed 3 of us in my current department for a sales position. I dressed to the nines for both the 1st and 2nd interview, and was very confident and concise (avoided ums, uhs) and gave a really good interview. He made almost no eye contact and made derogatory comments to me in both the interview and feedback session. I had said that I needed work on a specific area and he said it back as if I didn't know anything about sales or my current role. I am far from perfect, but he was also demeaning of me on my year end review, and I had to fight like hell to get my current position; in fact every person I talked to on the team of 30 or so people said I had shown that I deserve the job. I no longer work for him, but my question really is, how to deal with such a slimy person? He is making his hiring decisions on favorites rather than qualifications, and has a blatant history of doing so.

Be careful when you think you have the power to deal with someone that is over you in a company- -it can cost you your job so fast that you won't know what hit you. It sounds like you got picked over and left behind, that this person not only gave you an interview but was responsible for your review. Reviews are never pleasant because they don't say thank you but point out your flaws and where they think you need development and they will come up with something. You didn't like it and decided that you know more than he does. I never had a review that I liked and they always made me feel demeaned and I always thought I did a pretty good job so I always left feeling bitter so I understand. But that seems to be the way some think is the way to run things. It doesn't promote harmony or the desire to work any harder and it always made me want to kill them. But that's not a good idea either. I suggest you just let it go. He may get his info from other supervisors and that 's their job. You never get the full story and he may get it second hand. Burning bridges is useless and you never know where someone will pop up again in your life. And just because you work in a different area, doesn't mean supervisor's don't talk and compare notes. Be very careful what you do. And by the way, when they don't make eye contact means the job is already taken and you are wasting your time but the company demands that he interview others. . .Just the way it goes. . . LIfe isn't fair. . .just keep trying and you will get there. You need to promote connections-do that bonding thing. In business, sometimes you have to suck it up to succeed. You are never required to like who you work with-only keep a professional relationship with them. That doesn't mean sell your soul, but business is business. . .

He is slimy indeed. But soon he will get his due. It is only a matter of time. Good, you have chartered a different path for yourself. Take this as a lesson on for your future when you yourself would in a similar position of authority.
