I used to think 40-hour workweeks were the norm, but now it seems corporate downsizing is pressuring people to work 60 or more, including weekends. I know some people claim that working the extra hours is a personal choice, but it seems that there is pressure from top management to work those extra hours or risk not making the cut during the next downsizing period (which definitely takes the choice out of it). I also understand that America is one of only a few developed countries that doesn't have mandatory vacation time. Is corporate greed causing the average American to work longer and longer hours, basically against his or her will?

I am curious why some people are getting loans through the Georgia Lending Group, even able to go to an office, and some people are getting their money taken and getting nothing for it. I have had $1000.00 taken from me by them and no loan and no refund. Are the people that are writing here and saying they got loans planted by this company to throw people off or are they legitament people that actually got loans

We have two boys and I claim one and he claims the other. I have been claiming my younger son and his daycare expenses. My ex just asked the daycare for a tax receipt. He told me he puts both sons on his taxes and marks one non-dependant but still puts the daycare expense for him. Can he do that? I thought only one of us can claim it, and that would be me. Advice please.

Presume my significant other (non-married), exclusively a US citizen and resident, comes to stay with me in Canada as a visitor for the maximum allowable six month period. She is, legally, not allowed to work here.

Can she, from a computer at my house in Canada, work online for an American company? Would she have to file taxes with the CRA as well as the IRS? How does that work?

References appreciated. I can't find anything.

Part I
If you had to choose between:
A.) a very marketable and profitable career that you enjoyed
B.) a career that you were absolutely passionate about, but would make 1/3 as much money at most

Which would you choose and why?

Part II
The reason I am asking is because I am in this position now. I am a Software Engineer with 8 years of experience, and I am making a comfortable 6-digit salary. I like my job and I'm good at it, but it's not as dynamic and exciting as I would like it to be.

I have always had an incredible passion for cooking, so I thought it would be great to become a Professional Chef. I put myself through school working food service, and I am quite an accomplished cook. But, chefs have a very difficult time making what I would consider a comfortable salary and I would be starting at the bottom. I would still need culinary school also.

If you were in my position, what would you do, and why?

It just amazes me how people are nowadays. Up until recently, I worked 7 days a week (full-time job and part-time job). My part-time job is in retail so I have to stand on my feet during my entire shift. When it's not busy, I clean and put out stock and the other employees make fun of me because I'm working so hard. They want to make the money but don't want to have to do much to earn it. I take pride in my jobs and staying busy makes the time go by fast. Are you one of the lazy people who want things to come easy for you without working hard for it or are you a hard worker like myself?

The two kinds I'm interested in are

- the visas that Aussies, New Zealanders and Canadians get to work here for two years or so

- Fresh Talent Working in Scotland visas for people who studied here

Any experiences with this type of thing?

Thanks!

long story short, i got a credit card through a store several years ago and it went to collections

about a week ago, they started contacting me after years of not even using the card. i keep telling them i have no money to pay it, and they still call at least 2 times a day... i told them i understood i owe money and they started to demand other info which i refused to give them

i did some research online, and found a websie about fair debt collection on the ftc's website.
anyway, they called again last night, and i told them i have rights and if i request them to leave me alone, they need to and if they didnt stop contacting me, i would report them to the FTC and they pretty much said theyd like to see me try that.

i am sending them a letter(the creditors) today requesting they leave me alone, and under FTC rules and regulations they do so.

my question is this, after i send them a letter what if they keep harrasing me?? what can i do to protect myself??
