the streets and buildings are old , scummy and dirtyGive me something New Yorkers. Im from Chicago and Vegas. Those towns rock. You can get anywhere in 20 min and parking is ready available. What is redeemin quality of this city?

I want to take my 2 year old son on a ferry ride, but need something short. The trip to Staten Island would be too long. Any ideas? Need info on where to get on and off, how long the trip is, etc. We don't really need to go anywhere special - it's more just the expereince of being on a boat for him

hmm i would really appriciate if someone would shine some light on my following questions.

i would really love to live in new york, but im not planning on moving there until maybe in 3 and a half years? or less

what are some safe neighborhoods to live in, that are near new york city? i would really like to live outside of the city but just close enough to have a nice view,

also what would be a reasonable rent payment for a studio or maybe one bedroom apartament?

i would like to live maybe tops 30 minutes outside of the city if not less =)

This is going to sound very stupid to some (or most) but I'm an aspiring writer considering jobs in NYC. I've been looking up apartments located in NYC but I'm very confused on how the city is divided up. Yes, I've looked at a map but what would be considered the areas to avoid? And what is a broker's fee on apartments up there?

Considering I've spent my life in small towns across the U.S., I find the idea of living in a big city a little intimidating and I want to make sure I live in a decent part of town.

I'm looking for a 1 bedroom place in a nice area of Brooklyn or Jersey City (close to transit so I can commute to NYC for work b/c I have no car).....if I make $35,000 a month can I afford rent at $1200 per month? Also, will I get a decent apartment/community in Brooklyn for this price?

I'm moving to New York when I graduate (2008) and I might visit for christmas.
I was wondering what should I pack?
I'm from California so I have nothing for winter in New York.
Also, Where would be a good place to get stuff.
I'm 17 so nothing for old people.
Also, anything in packing in general.
Last time I traveled out of state was back when my mom did everything for me.
So yeah I don't know what I should pack.
O And I might be in New York for christmas break which is 2 weeks.

What about during the spring?
I want to go during spring break too.

Please lots of DETAILS and perferably LIST form.
