Is New York as expensive as everyone claims? Will it be that much of a shock if I move out that way without a job? What should someone coming from a relatively low income city - El Paso, TX, as far as financial situations are concernd?

1. Manhattan or Brooklyn area

2. 1 bedroom apartment

3. SAFE area

4. I can afford about $1200 per month for rent

5. great if I could find a complex w/ laundry on site if not, it's okay

6. easy commute into midtown, around BK, etc. b/c I don't own a car

how easy is it to food shop, get to nightlife, etc. in NYC b/c I don't have a car....

I have been to NYC several times and know about avoiding musicians selling CDs etc. However, I will be in NYC this September and will be taking pictures and doing light filming of some New York landmarks and areas for a creative project. My main worry is that I will be seen with my camera and will be taken for a foolish tourist. Does anybody have any advice to avoid or even minimize this?

Thank you in advance.

I would like to pay - but foreign credit cards are not accepted. Not on the NYC Finance Website, nor on their various automated or individual phone lines. Money orders are not available in Germany. What will happen if I never paid?

I will be moving from California to New York City when I'm 18. I've had no job experience. I’m not going to college but I will be attending Makeup Designory School (MUD). How much money should I save up? And How much do you think I’ll pay?

Here is what I have so far:
Rent - $900 for a one bedroom or $1500 for a 2 ($750 with a roommate) per month
School - $14,200 (not sure about payment yet)
Gas - $35
Electricity - $40-$100
Cable/Internet - $115
Phone - $100
Food/general household items - $250
Transportation - $76 30 - Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard
Furniture - $500-$1000 (basic stuff to start out with; bed, some kitchen appliances, desk/chair, etc)
Water –
Sewer –
Laundry –
Entertainment –

I’m not sure about other utilities such as water and sewer.
What else am I missing and approx how much are they?
Also when would be a good time to work? I can take either day classes (8am-5pm) or night classes (6pm – 10pm).

I don't mean an in-depth look at the city. I'm not looking for hidden gems or out of the way places. I'm talking about seeing what people mostly associate with New York (ie. Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, etc.). Thank you.

I'm a student and I want a studio in Manhattan soon, like by the first of the month. I don't know where to start looking and time is dwindling before school starts. I have little to no preferences except for location. I don't want to be really above 120th street.
