Is New York as expensive as everyone claims? Will it be that much of a shock if I move out that way without a job? What should someone coming from a relatively low income city - El Paso, TX, as far as financial situations are concernd?

I do have a bachelors degree in business... What should someone coming from a relatively low income city - El Paso, TX, as far as financial situations are concerned? Is Brooklyn a feasible option?

A Bachelor's in Business will get you a job in retail.
NYC is very competitive and compared to El Paso it's very expensive.
You have to do some self-evaluation. Can you stand rejection. If you fall do you brush yourself off and try again. Are you driven. Would it bother you to work 12 hour days?
If you have negative answers to these questions you will have a hard time in NY. It's best to stay in El Paso.

It is expensive. You won't fully grasp how much until you've been here a while. Housing costs are really high, but everything else costs more, too: taxes are higher, sales tax is more than 8%, basic goods like groceries cost a little more, etc. State and city taxes are taken out of your paycheck. If you have a few thousand dollars saved, you could get by for a month or two without a job, but it's also a pretty competitive job market, so it might take you more than a month to find a job.
There are ways to make it more affordable. Live with roommates. Most neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens are less expensive than Manhattan. Don't bring a car. Find the free entertainment. Budget like crazy. It's definitely manageable, but it will be a little bit of a shock. (I've been living in the city for almost 5 years and I still get surprised by how expensive things are sometimes.)

It is very expensive!!! Of course jobs may have higher salaries then in El Paso, but it doesn't mean you are going to be earning a ton as soon as you start a new job.
I would really suggest looking for a job before you get here....so you can afford to live comfortable. Most one bedroom apartments are around $1800 to easily over $2000 a month and that is not necessarily even in a great location. Also, try looking for a roomate that will help cut costs greatly!!!
Good luck!

In no way should you move to NYC without a job...that is unless you have family you can mooch off of for a good 6 months or so.
I moved from NYC to Texas and cannot fathom moving back even with a good income. You can expect everything to be at least twice the price you pay in El Paso. I know, I been to both.
Good luck either way!

Yes its as expensive as everyone says, just check craiglist and you'll see what decent apartments go for...even in brooklyn they're 1200 a month for a small 1 room. And if you dont have some sort of specialized job you can be expecting to look for work for a few weeks to a few months. If you dont have a Bachelors then you're really going to have a hard time. Starting income in NY is about 35,000 a year. And dont bring a car.

Yes it is expensive, but it is all relative. My fiance and I moved here about 2 years ago from Pittsburgh, PA. Our salaries more than doubled with our new jobs in Manhattan. So yes cost of living is higher, but so are salaries. We live very comfortably here and can afford a nice lifestyle. Don't let people scare you off.... It's a great place to live!

If I were you, I'd move to Brooklyn. You could sublet, it's a lot cheaper, and the train ride to the city is only 30 minutes.
