NYCgal71 - no sh*t sherlock! of course I'm going to go to the areas of interest, of course no area is %100 safe, if so everyone would want to live there. what I'm doing is called research - b/c it's not too smart to go out and just look "anywhere" w/o any basis. but you wouldn't know that. just say in NYC, honey and don't try and help anyone outside of there, lmao.

First of all, I've never owned a car. It's pretty easy to get around, so don't worry about that.

You're probably going to get priced out of most of Manhattan. Try upper Manhattan: Washington Heights or Inwood.

I think you could find a $1200 1 bedroom in Fort Greene, Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens, Prospect Heights. Maybe Kensington or Sunsent Park. A lot of the cool kids are moving to Bushwick these days. (Park Slope, Williamsburg, and Green Point, while fantastic neighborhoods, are pretty expensive.) I live in Prospect Heights and like it a lot.

Laundry in the building is really rare in New York in my experience. I live 2 doors down from a laundromat, though, so it's not really inconvenient.

Hopefully that's a good jumping off point. A lot of neighborhoods have websites or you can find more information on real estate company sites. Good luck!

1200 a month is great in NY....I used to live at 565 prospect place and they had newly renovated 1 bedrooms at 1200 a month. It was an ok area.

and the commute was the best in the city. it sits on the brooklyn shuttle, and the train entrance is right out the front doors. Its 1 stop to the A/C line, its 1 stop the other way to the 2/3 or 4/6 line, and its 2 stops to the B/Q line....so you can get pretty much anywhere in the city in about 20 minutes.

LMFAO...you been lookin in the absolute wrong places. Avoid most parts of Harlem, Bushwick and Bed-Stuy, they actually pretty bad neighborhoods. In Brooklyn you should look at Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO or Park Slope. If you want the cheapest, closest place to live thats nearby lower manhattan, i suggest Jersey City. Its directly across the river, and only 10 minutes away by train, plus its hell of a lot cheaper than anyplace in the city. BTW, alot of the time when people say "Columbia University Area" they mean Harlem, because the two neighborhoods are next to each other. the real COlumbia University area is Morningside Heights.

Greenpoint
Ocean Parkway - Gravesend
Williamsbourg

You could only rent a shoe box in Manhattan for $1200 a month, yet plenty of nice apartments in Brooklyn for that much.

Come to NYC/Brooklyn and explore the areas that interest you.

No area is "safe."

People get killed crossing the street.

You must be aware of your environment and your perception of safe.

As for what you seek in an apartment, you must do your own search, or, go to an apartment search firm when you are ready to move here.

Strangers are not going to assist you in finding an apartment, with your criteria.
