I almost choked when I read your question, and I mean that in the best way! If you go to Times Square, the only stores that you'll find are stores that are available where you live like The Gap and lots of restaurants that available where you live, like Friday's and Olive Garden.
A good touristy place to shop (and also, not so touristy) is SoHo because it has a good mix of up and coming designers, unique shops, and some of the stores from back home. Also, you go can to Fifth Avenue around the 50's where all of the high end stores are. But SoHo is your best bet.

Times Square for shopping !!!! EWWW YUCK.
At least try around 34th st and bdwy or 7th ave, Macy's, H&M, Forever 21 are some shops there. SOHO is another good option, 17th st and 7th there is a Loehman's, Century 21 is across the st from the WTC, Canal st for knock offs. BUT NO SHOPPING AT TIMES SQUARE!!! If you want to shop for jewelry I also like 47 St. and parts of Canal st.

There are stores in the Times Square area for shopping since it has been revitalized and the area has vastly improved over the years. There is affordable shopping in the Times Square area. Also there is the famous Macy's at 7th Ave and 34th street in Manhattan which can be walked to from Times Square which is located at 7th Ave and 42nd street. There are many nice shops along 5th ave from 34th street up to 59th street.
In fact there are also many nice stores and small shops that are in the Downtown area of Manhattan along the lower East side and in the so ho are near Houston street. In fact manhatan can be said to be a shoppers mecca becasue there is shopping to do all over the borough of Manhattan.
There are many nice eateries in the Time Square area and the area below that going down to 23rd street.
I would not limit myself to just Times Square but I would allow enough time on my trip to New York to visit other areas to shop and browse.
I wish you both a great trip to New York and it has really improved for shopping and touring over the years.

Times square is horrible for shopping
Unless you want post cards and I love NY t-shirts.
Sure they have every chain store known to man but it is all the same garbage you can get anywhere.
Go downtown and walk around you'll see something that interests you - I wouldn't recommend Time Sq at all - It is a sewer!
Soho - Yes
Canal St - yes
East Village - for your more eclectic purchases
and the west village for other things
Stay out of Midtown all together - Every Chain store known to man has a store here.

Times Square is tailored more for Touristy items....
34th Street Herald Square has a good number of stores and a mall if you want to stay in the immediate area.
But like many people have said here before.....I would hit SOHO if you really want her to have fun.....very popular area for Shopping....
I don't recommend Chinatown if this is an anniversary gift....makes u appear to be cheap....

No chinatown is you can find everything there at a reasonable price.
If you don't want to pay sales tax go to the malls in New Jersery just a short bus ride from New York.
