I have gone to New York City at various times of the year (spring, summer, winter, and fall). I think that the Christmas season is the best time of year. Sure the weather can get cold – but the city is “all dressed up” with Christmas decorations and lights. It looks very pretty--especially with a (light) snow. Just bring warm clothing.

You can do all of the typical tourist things. Going to museums might be a good idea if the weather is bad – as it is an indoor activity. But do walk about the city to see the decorations and lights in the evening (especially near Rockefeller Center). Also, try to see the Rockette’s Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall, as this is the only time of year to see the Christmas Spectacular. It is a good show.

First: Pack warm clothes! New York can get really cold during Winter. (I know it seems silly, since I'm sure you were planning to dress for Winter anyway, but it really can get cold in Manhattan)
You will definitely want to get tickets to the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show...I don't know how to buy them online, but you want to get them in advance as the show sells out a lot of its' dates early.
Speaking of shows, if you want to see a Broadway show cheap, there is a place in Times Square called "TKTS" that sells discounted tickets for Broadway shows. The tickets are for the same day and there is a line and you never know what shows may be available, but it is a great way to catch a show.
You will want to see Rockefeller Center and the city's Christmas tree (it's always beautiful) and you can go ice skating at the Rink there.
If you want to attend Mass, New York has some incredible Churches, the most spectacular IMHO is St. Patrick's Cathedral.
A carriage ride around Central Park is a must! Do it around twilight for the best look at the lights of the City before it gets too cold at night.
There is so much more to see: the Little Italy and Chinatown sections are a blast, SoHo and the Village are great shopping, and a trip to the South Street Seaport is always fun!
Have a wonderful time and welcome to America in advance!

Yes, bring warm clothes. Go to all the Christmas window displays at the department stores like Saks Fifth Ave, Lord & Taylors, Macy's and Bloomingdales. Walk up 5th Ave to see the snowflake lights strung across the street. Go to Rockerfeller Center and ice skate in the rink and see the tree (or go to the "Top of the Rock" for a fantastic view). I think it beats the Empire State Bldg.

Take a Grayline bus tour of all the touristy things. Take a ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Also, go to Little Italy, which is very colorful during Christmas.

Was just there a few weeks ago. There is heaps to do in NYC. Visit Statue of liberty, explore central park, go up the empire state building, visit 9/11 memorial. If you are in to the Sex and the city you can do the tour ( i did twice- separate visits) they have a hop on and off bus that you pay like 40 bucks for 48 hours and it tours around the city, brooklyn and harlem and they have stops. This would be the first thing i would do so you get to see the whole city and then decide where you wanna get off. Oh the staten island is a FREE ferry ride and its 20 mins one way so if you are tight for cash you can get great city views and statue of liberty views also. Have fun

Hotel rooms are more expensive, yet Christmas in New York is a fun time. New Yorkers are friendly and there's a Santa on every corner in Midtown. It's not much different that Christmas in Paris except for the food is not as good.

What a wonderful time to be in NYC. Christmas is so magical in NYC. The lights, the tree, the store windows. You must see everything. Go to St. Patricks Catherdral, its gorgeous! Buy nuts on the street. The smells are incredible. Dress warm though.
