I have been to NYC several times and know about avoiding musicians selling CDs etc. However, I will be in NYC this September and will be taking pictures and doing light filming of some New York landmarks and areas for a creative project. My main worry is that I will be seen with my camera and will be taken for a foolish tourist. Does anybody have any advice to avoid or even minimize this?

Thank you in advance.

Fear not. NYers love tourist. It makes us feel pride that someone thinks so highly of our city to visit it.

Why is that a concern.....don't worry about looking like a tourist....focus on the task in hand.....
If your doing this as a project, I am sure your going to be using techniques to take your shots.....unlike many tourist who just stand in the front of the landmark and Clunk.....

Just by technique alone (angles, shadows...etc.) maybe people may not see you as a tourist. But like many NYers....we have our agenda in hand and don't have the time to start looking at people and determining they are tourist. We will help when the help is asked or needed.

I know how you feel, but just get over the feeling. It's really the only way to not look like a tourist: Confidence.

I've done so many photo projects and they're always involving NYC and I used to feel like such a tourist but eh, no one is really looking at you, they're looking at what you're taking the picture of.

What's the matter with being a tourist? NYers take pity on tourists and occasionally help them out.

Umm... carry a notebook and don't wear sneakers. Bump into people every once in a while and shout randomly at no one.

Then again, everyone there is a tourist so what difference does it make???

Just don't worry about it. If you appear to be confident in your surroundings, you'll look less like a tourist.
