I need to get from Penn Station to 5th around the upper 50's. What would be the best bus route to take? Please help, I've never traveled by myself in the city before. Thanks!

Here's what I'd do: Follow the signs and exit Penn Station near 7th Avenue. Walk one block east to 6th Ave and catch the subway there. You can take either the B or D train to 47/50th Street/Rockefeller Center, which will put you out on 6th Ave and 50th Street, or take the N, R, or W train to 59th Street/5th Avenue. Either should get you close enough to your destination to walk the rest of the way.

There are a couple of bus routes that go up and down 5th Ave if you think that would be easier. Again, go out the 7th Ave. exit and walk two blocks to 5th Ave and look at the bus stops to see which bus number you want to take. (There'll be a sign with a map.)

Take a crosstown bus (going from West to East) at 34th Street.
Ask for a transfer when you pay the fare. Make sure you have exact change or a Metrocard. They don't give change.

Get off at Madison Avenue and 34th Street. (Fifth Avenue traffic only goes downtown, and Madison only goes uptown) Take an Uptown bus to your destination, using the transfer. You'll then have to walk just 1 block east back to Fifth Avenue.

New Yorkers are very friendly, and there are a lot of police around Penn Station - so you won't have any trouble getting help with finding the buses you need.

You walk across to the East side or catch an East bound Bus on 34th Street and then hop on the 3 bus (Madison) it takes you right up Madison Avenue which is one block East of 5th Avenue

For future reference, the phone number for bus directions is 1-718-339-1234. Have paper and pen ready to write down the information.
