I'm looking for a 1 bedroom place in a nice area of Brooklyn or Jersey City (close to transit so I can commute to NYC for work b/c I have no car).....if I make $35,000 a month can I afford rent at $1200 per month? Also, will I get a decent apartment/community in Brooklyn for this price?
(I don't have any family to help me figure this stuff out, that's why I am asking, thanks).

You can't afford $1200 on a $35K/year salary.
Most landlords/brokers calculate it like this: if your yearly salary is 40 times the rent of your apartment or more, you can afford it. So on a $35K salary, you could afford $875/month. However, I know from personal experience that even that is really a stretch unless you are awesome at budgeting.
Also think of it this way: rent should be about 30% of your monthly income. If it's 40%, that's still manageable but tight. If you're only making $35K, $1200/mo. is more like 60%. That's an unmanageable situation.
You can do better than $1200 in Brooklyn and Jersey City. You might want to consider getting a roommate, though.

Do you mean you make $35,000 a year? Is that before or after taxes? You also need to figure in utilities, transportation fees, food etc... $1200 a month for a one br sounds unreasonable to me. Does this include your utilities?
If not, I would look for something less expensive in NJ & commute.

That rent is more than a third of your monthly salary. It is usually recommended that you spend 25 to 30 % of your salary for rent. You would be spending more than that and you would be on a very tight budget...esp. if utilities and other expenses are high there.

I told you about the apartment we had on prospect place. 35000 may be a little lean to afford 1200 a month plus metro card, utilities, and food.

That depends. Taxes are a big hit. Utilities add up, too. But yes... you can live on that, but it will be paycheck to paycheck. You won't be starving, so don't think that.

kinda!! you can. but you can't go out every night or spend lots of cash. you may want to get some place cheaper, just so you're sure you can go out and have a good time
