LA w/less rent & car expenses or NY w/higher rent & subway fare? Which offers lower cost of living expenses?

I think it evens out, though you might have an advantage in NYC if you live in one of the 4 "outer" boroughs (Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Bronx) since rent is cheaper than in Manhattan. In LA you need a car and gas alone there is more expensive than in NY, and in NYC you can live without one (Insurance in NYC could also be expensive)

if you give a crap about the earth, New Yorkers use the least amount of energy and fossil fuels than most of the country. LA uses some of the most. If you like sitting in traffic, move to LA and pay for a car and inflated gas prices.

Anyway, this question can't accurately be answered. Both LA and NY are filled with billionaires and paupers. It all depends on where and how you live.

i would say they are about equal because rent is only a little less in L.A., but care expenses are a lot, high gas, high insurance, more driving, car repairs because you drive so much. In Ny city rent is higher but you don't need a car. I'd say it all totals to close to the same amount monthly. You should make your decision based on what kind of atmosphere you want, what kind of climate, what jobs pay in both and i would guess that NY probably pays more for jobs.

Tally all the costs of owning an auto these days.
Purchase cost, licenses, tolls, depreciation, maintanence, repairs, gas, insurance, parking fees, annnd........the cost of a garage.
Any resale value can be deducted, but a new auto is in store.

These are both pretty expensive cities. I think, but don't know for sure, that someone with limited means is probably better off in New York.
