cause in chicago the trash cans are in the alley.. never in the front of the house or in front of businesses.

Why waste valuable real estate with alley ways? Do you know what Manhattan real estate costs? There used to be a lot more alleys in the city before the turn of the 20th century but after the prominence of electricity, sewer, and indoor plumbing alleys became relatively outdated. The garbage trucks only drive on streets as well so keeping garbage in alleys would not be effective.

Because that's a waste of valuable real estate. With real estate prices at a premium, why just plunk garbage cans out there and waste the space? A shop can be crammed into that space for rent of $9000 a month!

Manhattan may not have alleys but all the other boroughs do.
