I know that the powder or whatever is in the bullet, but what makes it shoot, and does only the tip shoot out of the barrel?

I don't hunt. I don't intend to purchase a .22 to shoot prairie dogs or birds. Just to be clear.

I am interested solely in the marksmanship aspect of the sport. What are some quality made, accurate and reasonably priced (under $500) .22 caliber rifles that are on the market right now?

I was just wondering what I could purchase...I live in Texas and the laws say that at the age of 18 you can purchase shotguns and rifles including assault weapons...you can't actually purchase pistols until the age of 21...I know a lot of the weapons that I've seen at these shows are illegal to actually carry but where is the line drawn on the weapons I can and can't buy at a show....

Where it shows the Model Number on the barrel, it also says 2 3/4 & 3. I assume that I can only use these size shells with this gun. My friend ( who I purchased it from ) claims I can use the 3 1/4 size shells he bought me. Is he correct or should I just go buy size 3 shells? I am 35 and if you can't tell this is my first shotgun. I know just about everything about revolvers & autos but I am ignorant when it comes to shotguns. I know you can put .22 shells in a .25 but that doesn't mean you should : )

Thanks

I will be hunting mostly wild pigs(50-200lbs) and reh deer (about 40lb bucks) in germany. I want to get the most out of the rifle model I have chosen and need to get the most out of a barrel that is only 20in long. I have been told all three of these calibers would be a good choice, but I am not convinced. How can I get more distance out of this barrel lenght? 7x64 is common here, as is 30-06. I have just been told .308's are also a good round (never used it). Take into consideration I do own a win. 30-06 in the states as well as a win. .270; so I am shying away from those two calibers for my new rifle. Regardless, I am out for performance and doubling up on calibers really isn't a huge deal if I can utilize every inch of barrel. Please help in my decision making. Thanks for your time.

1. My budy has owned both and says the short has the same ballistics for a lot less kick. Can anyone specifically confirm or deny this claim? And why?
2. Are the shorts a fad that I won't be able to easily purchase five to twenty years from now?
3. Ballistics, are they any better or not?

Hi, I have my eye on a deactivated WW2-era Colt 1911, presented in a cherrywood frame, that is on sale in a gunshop in the USA (a friend has told me about it and sent pictures).

My grandfather brought an identical model back from WW2 with him 9that was given to him by a USMC Officer) but it was destroyed in a house fire a few months back, so I'd like to get him this as a present as it is virtually identical and really well presented.

I stress it has been professionally deactivated in the US, so should I have any trouble if I get it mailed here in the UK?

Thanks

How important is scent blocking clothing when deer hunting? I hunt from a tree stand in western Missouri, mostly in wooded areas and most of my shots occur at less than 100 yards.

I was wondering, I have heard about putting rock salt into shot gun shells home defense. I live in an area where I could use this, hopefully not, but being in California, home intruders have more rights than I do. Because I do not want to kill or mane the person, I thought about just inflicting enough pain that they won’t not be able to move until the police showed up. I have tried rock salt and was not impressed. I was wondering if anyone has just for sh*ts and giggles put those yellow sift pellets into a shotgun shell and blasted it? Would it do some pain at about 10-15 yards away? Not trying to kill the person, and I don’t really want to hear about sawed off shotguns or tazers or pepper spray or using a 357 magnum. Anybody else know where I could get rubber bullets? Any ideas or suggestions? If you leave a dumb answer so you can get your kudo points, it will be erased from this column; I don’t want to hear stupid remarks, thanks.

I need to know the following: how far away, how many rounds of ammo would be necessary, type of bear make a difference? 2nd Part: Is it possible to kill a bear with a handgun(size, bullet type)or with a rifle/shotgun(size, bullet type)? 3rd Part: Answs. needed not for hunt but showoffs at work who "know" guns. Is it possible to kill a bear(type, wieght, distance, gun size, bullet size) with handgun,rifle/shotgun? How close/far away for a head shot(realistically)? So tired of "bragging" at work & want to kill subject with logic. Thankyou for your serious answers. Guarddog

My great great great grandad had a Parker Brothers Shotgun, 12 ga. back in 1900. It's in about 75-85% condition. It is double barrel and the serial # is 71xxx. He was the sheriff of Hamilton County and used this gun as his primary. We know he got it around 1900, so we think that the gun was made from 1890 +. It had one double barrel cast iron barrel, and another Damascus barrel still with it. We had the original case but lost it. It has been shot only about 200 times from what I know of. Can you determine the value of it, and when it was made?
