Scope or steel sights?

I use aperature sights on one rifle for accuracy and a scope on another rifle for the same accuracy i get with aperature sights. With iron sights you're only limited by your imagination as to how many combinations you can use, scopes are pretty much cut and dried, 4 or 5 reticle styles to choose from, maybe a neat-o lighted reticle, but other then that, you're prety much stuck with the reticles and magnification you can afford. Iron sights , especially high end aperature and/or ghost ring sights can equal and even surpass the accuracy you can achieve with a scope, depending on your eye sight of course. Many competitive shooters use iron sights instead of scopes, then again, there's a lot of scope shooters who won't "waste their time" with iron sights. Just my humble opinion here, but any decent rifleman should be able to shoot well with iron sights or a scope.I've taught my kids how to shoot, they both learned the fundamentals on iron sight rifles, then if they wanted to, they got a scope to shoot with. My son prefers scopes, my daughter prefers iron sights, tho both kids can shoot equally well with either.

The real answer to this question is "What is the shooter most comfortable with".
Steel or open sights are fine for those that can shoot accurately and comfortably with them. I can hit a quarter at 350 yards through an open sight. Comfort matters.

Scopes diriect the FOV (field of view) so that an individual is automatically picturing the target. Some people can shoot extremely well just because of this reason. They are automatically focused on the target. This gives them a high comfort level and allows them to shoot more accurately. I can hit a nickle at 480 yards comfortably through the added aid of a scope.
Then, some people have a crescent scar over their dominant eye because scope + recoil + eyebrow = ouch. They then refuse to use scopes because it hurt. It became uncomfortable.

I use old school peep sights on my M1917 and can drop any deer size target within 250 to 300 yrds, but the drawback is being able to lead a moving target, for this open irons are the best in my opinion, low powered scopes are ok for leading to but high powered ones tend to crowd your focus, just food for thought.alot has to do with your shooting enviroment,if you are in dense brush a scope is pretty much useless, peeps ok,but irons are best, long range across a field a scope is probably best.when I hunt in dense cover I use my 30/30 lever with a raised scope mount, that way I can use both the scope if its open,or the irons if it is too dense.

I feel that you should be proficient with iron sights before graduating to a scope.

My favorite are aperture sights, like Lyman, Williams and Mojo. You should be able to shoot well up to 250 meters with these and get rid of all the headaches and costs of fragile optical telescope sights.

I like a good open sight gun for shots under 100 yards, and I like a scope for shots that may exceed 100 yards.

This totally depends on what type of shooting you intend to do.Hunting? Target Shooting? There are modern rifle mounts available now that allow you to use a scope or your iron sights, at your own leisure.
