I will be hunting mostly wild pigs(50-200lbs) and reh deer (about 40lb bucks) in germany. I want to get the most out of the rifle model I have chosen and need to get the most out of a barrel that is only 20in long. I have been told all three of these calibers would be a good choice, but I am not convinced. How can I get more distance out of this barrel lenght? 7x64 is common here, as is 30-06. I have just been told .308's are also a good round (never used it). Take into consideration I do own a win. 30-06 in the states as well as a win. .270; so I am shying away from those two calibers for my new rifle. Regardless, I am out for performance and doubling up on calibers really isn't a huge deal if I can utilize every inch of barrel. Please help in my decision making. Thanks for your time.

.308 is an excellent all around cartridge, however if you are hunting both roe deer and hogs, you may want to go with the 7x64 for a couple of reasons.
First, the .308 is way too much for that little deer. With the available rounds in 7x64 in Europe, you can get very light loads that will serve that purpose well, then get heavier rounds for the boar.
Also, if you ever intend to hunt in France or Belgium or (I think) Switzerland, you will be prohibited from any "military" calibers, which is what .308 is, being developed by the US Army. That's one reason why the 7x64 is so popular in Europe.
One rule I have heard repeated again and again is to use what the locals use. I understand that 7x64 is the most popular hunting round in Germany, so there's a lot of good reasons to make that choice.
If I were you I'd consult with some hunters who hunt in your area for their opinions. Also, check a few stores for their supply of each caliber. The more and wider selection of ammo available, the better.
If you were in the US I'd say .308 without question. In Germany, 7x64 may be your best choice.

Any one of these calibers will do, but I too prefer the 308 caliber..
Meanwhile have you checked to see if it is legal for you to take your own personal weapon and ammunition into Germany? The restrictions are very involved and you will need to make arrangements several months ahead of time to do this legally.Unless you are booking a hunt then in that case your professional guide can assist you with this.
NOTE ### Seems you have all of the bases covered. Check into the 308 caliber as I advised earlier. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed with it's range capabilities and performance.Good Hunting!

All the barrel length will do is slow down your fps. The ratio is about 150fps per inch. Therefore each caliber will lose the same fps per barrel inch.
I personally shoot a Ruger Frontier in .308. It has a 16" barrel it has never let me down. It still packs enough punch to do the job at 300yds on any deer.
In fact, I'm taking it bear hunting in just a couple of weeks.
I guess what I'm saying is that barrel length shouldn't affect your choice of caliber.

I would go with the 308
the 308 will out preform the 30/06 with lighter bullets 150gr or less, you already own a 30/06, and it is a short action
the barrel length will effect all three about the same so it is still a level playing field

I would go for the .308. They are all good rounds, though. Just whatever works for you.

No competition, go 308. Huge choice of bullet weights to cover everything from varmints to bear, ammo available everywhere and going to be around for a long time.

I'd use a .308. Less recoil and no flinching. Less weight with the smaller barrel will increase recoil.

How about expanding your horizons and trying out an 8mm Mauser round. It has a little more oomphf than the 06 and is very common in europe.
