You want to shoot the deer in heart. Typically you shoot just below and behind the shoulder. Depending on your state a .270 or 12 gauge slug are two proven rounds.

Stampy Skunk, if you shoot the deer above the shoulder you will miss the heart by a good 8 inches. The heart is down just barely a couple of inches above the bottom 'inside' of the deer's chest. The others had the idea, hit them broadside through the lungs. This not only stops them from breathing but it will sever the large arteries above the heart and they will bleed to death on less than a minute. If you really want to stop them in their tracks put a bullet though the shoulder blades. You will ruin some meat that way but they will not go anywhere. You may have to do a follow up kill shot on that deer to put him out of his misery.

the best way to kill a big whitetail takes time and persistence. You need to do proper preseason scouting and do your best to pattern the deers movements. Once you have done your preseason scouting, scent control is the next step to master. If a big whitetail catches a human scent you wont see them until next year. Big whitetails are extremely smart and use their sight and smell to their advantage. This is why washing your clothes, and yourself in scent eliminator is virtually a must. Also, pay attention to the wind direction and always set up downwind of the trail. Another tip is to be patient. If you can try and sit for a full day, although the morning and evening are the best times to hunt, sometimes big deer will move in the afternoon, to or from a water source, ect.
Finally, practice your shots, whether its gun or bow, if you cant make the shot all your work is pointless. You never want to miss the shot of a lifetime.

The best way is to place your kill shot properly.* The most vital area on a Deer is near the front shoulder. You have an area within a 12" circle to place your kill shot that is where the heart and lungs are located, hit anywhere within that 12" area and you will have no problem bagging your Deer. Forget about trying to place your shot in the neck area. It is to risky and is not always successful in bagging yourself a Deer.*

I suggest you take a hunter safety course. They also talk about the best areas to shoot at from what angles. A true sportsman will only take a sure broadside shot at an animal standing still and not walking or running. A sure kill shot through both lungs is best. The heart is to small a target and the neck is not the best either. Watch the Outdoor Channel and you will only see standing broadside shots 99% of the time. Seldom will a professional hunter shoot at the heart a double lung shot is their prefered shot.

the most effective way to do this is to look for the sweet spot this spot is located right at the arm pit on the deer. say the deer's head is pointed looking left and the hind quarters is to the right where you can clearly see the broad side of the deer you will notice the white under arm hairs to the right of the shoulder this is a mid point of the deer where vitals are lungs heart to remember this sweet spot all you need to do is on ether side of your body stick your thumb in your arm pit because this where your vitals deer are no different. one shot there will put him in the dirt. using a 30/30 with a hollow point ammo will make this trick look even better i hope this helps holler

A shot, with a gun or arrow, to the heart/lungs is the most leathal and also the easiest target to hit on a deer.

Follow a hunter more capable than yourself. When he bags the deer, slap him and take it from him.

Neck shots are best with a .25-06 Remington or bigger. Finding one is the trick because the bigger the White tail the more wiley they are. Patience, patience, patience and keep out of sight and be quiet.
Good luck.
