Gun shows are probably the best but they don't always have waht you want every time. gunbroker.com is like a ever going gun show online. It operates very similar to ebay. The prices are just as good and hundreds of gun stores across the nation post their stock on the site. So you can pretty much find anything at any time. I have had recent success with the site myself. They have faqs on the site to explain how to go about everything as well, including state laws on firearm purchases.

Hey I live in CA also, go to your closest Big 5 and look at the guns on sale. Sometimes they have the Savage 30-06, or the Mossberg ATR on sale. You can also look at some used gun stores and get some good deals from time to time. Although if you and your friend DID have a 91/30 you could both split the cost of ammo and get a spam can for dirt cheap. This would give you a gun that was equivalent to a 308 Win. Besides for 500.00, you could have a 91/30 and 1200 rounds of ammo. Not a bad deal! You can also buy the synthetic stock for the Mosin and throw the old wood stock away!

I am a fan of gun shows and pawn shops. Their prices are flexible. You can't talk someone down at Gander Mountain or another sporting goods store. And online is even worse, you have watch as the prices go up. I prefer seeing a price tag on the gun, and knowing I can get it for less.

The least expensive is to buy from a person who wants to sell one.* There is a sporting goods store called Dunham's which has a good selection of firearms both Military and Civilian at reasonable prices.* Check to find the closest one nearest you.* Then there always is Walmart but they only sell new firearms.*
