I am interested in purchasing a 12gauge for the simple reasoning that I love fishing and I would like to be safe in the the foot hills in Northern California(ex: Mountain lions, bears, etc...) What would be the appropriate steps and regulations I would have to undergo to buy a firearm? Note: this is going to be my 1st firearm purchase.

It is a Marlin 336as 30/30. I have found the serial # and it is 02047xxx i heard that I would subtract the 20 from 100 so it means it would be made in 1980. Does this mean the serial number is 47xxx? Or would it be 100 - 02 which would be 1998? And is this model made any more? I couldn't find it on their webpage. And I paid $240 for it. It is about 85-92% and it has a scope. Was this a good price?

Here's what I know about the gun....Its stainless, 6.5 inch barrell, shoots both 22lr and 22mag, the wood grips are in good shape, gun shows some wear, gun was made in 1956 or 57 with low numbers. I bought the gun early this year in a gun store in Reno,NV. I paid $170 for it. The dealer had the gun in storage. I told him what I was looking for and this is one of 2 guns he showed me. I've shot this gun and shots nice. Upon learning how old it was, I've retired the gun.

I'm upgrading and I've decided on a .223 the local shop has a new in box ruger ranch rifle the target model with bull barrel and harmonic dampener/ the other a used bushmaster ar with shorter barrel flash hider and carry handle (A2 receiver I believe) and 4 way adjustable stock. I like to target shoot and this will be my predator gun. the bushmasters really light which I like but I've always been of the opinion light guns aren't accurate they both are the same price and I'm going to be trading my old saiga and a muzzleloader for them. so, I'm looking to weigh out pros and cons. accuracy is important. and I want to reiterate this is the new ranch rifle with thumbhole stock not the old version. please make up my mind.

The shop I bought it from sells guns, but the gun guy wasn't there. All this person could tell me was that it is a 8mm Mauser. Any links to reference pages would be extremely helpful.

I'm a fan of the XD 45, but dont like that it doesn't have the double action. I like the feel of the double action, because it has less triger travel, and creep. Springfield is well known for there accuracy, although, hand guns aren't known for accuracy all that well. I just want to be ready for when the zombies come you understand. (Plinking, target shooting, and home deffence) So I turn it to you, the good people of Yahoo Answers. Penny for your thoughts chief! :)

Hi there, I am writing a short story about a hitman in modern-day Europe. I need to equip him with a handgun (as his tactic is to shoot people from short-range, no more than say ten feet) but know nothing about handguns; would a revolver or a magazine-fed pistol be better?

The way I see it is that a pistol can be silenced, but is more prone to jamming and ejected shell casings are difficult to retrieve (evidence for police).

With a revolver it is a simpler design and the shell casings stay in the gun but it is noisy?

Thanks for all serious answers- I am actually writing a story so please no stupid comments about me planning an assassination of my own. Cheers!

PS, This question is in this category as it is the closest I could find to a shooting category.
