I'm a fan of the XD 45, but dont like that it doesn't have the double action. I like the feel of the double action, because it has less triger travel, and creep. Springfield is well known for there accuracy, although, hand guns aren't known for accuracy all that well. I just want to be ready for when the zombies come you understand. (Plinking, target shooting, and home deffence) So I turn it to you, the good people of Yahoo Answers. Penny for your thoughts chief! :)

??? Do not know what land you come from, but a double action semi-auto has a lot MORE trigger travel than a single action.

The term is only applicable on the first shot. With the double action you c.o.c.k. hammer and fire the round on the first shot using the trigger. For that to happen, the trigger has to move considerably more distance than a single action, where you c.o.c.k. the hammer with your thumb. Subsequent shots are the same for both as the slide has c.o.c.k.e.d. the hammer for you.

The Springfield XD is a striker action. When you rack the slide to get the first round into the chamber, you c.o.c.k. the striker. Therefore each trigger pull is the same including the first. That is a characteristic of a single action semi auto.

I suggest you get a true double action and compare the first shot with the subsequent shots. There is no advantage of a double action over a striker fired XD.

Double action in a 45 is an interesting solution to a non-existant problem. I own a number of 45 autos, colt and EAA for the main part. The EAA models are double action; which I have never used. Reading your blurb made me realize that little point; this evening I am going to hit the range and fire one of them from a DA start, just to see what it is like. If I could only have one pistol it would be a colt 1911 45 so the question for me is really a moot point.

Stick with the XD 45. I own one myself and am very happy with it. The trigger travel is not far at all. The quality of the gun is great. I've put probably 2000 rounds through mine and not a single jam yet (knock on wood). Not to mention it comes with a holster, double mag holder, 2 magazines, a speed loader, a cable lock, and finally a bore brush. Not a bad deal at all for under 600 bucks.

if ya gotta have a sweet double action but like the .45 ( like me) then check out the Para Ordinance LDA (long double action) series of pistols. They operate the same as a standard 1911 style pistol, but have THE sweetest double action trigger. I love em!! In fact, I'm carrying one right now.

If anything you should just stick to the XD 45. I bought mine last week for the exact same purpose you want one. i also didn't like that it didn't have double action but now that I have bought one and shot one it doesn't matter to me anymore. Use to have a Glock 21 (also .45 acp) and I'm happy I traded that in for my new XD : )
