It should be a 250 Savage, a great little cartridge and the parent of the 22-250, but it's .257 . It was originally marketed with the 87 grain bullet, great for varmints but poor for deer, in order to obtain the then-unheard of velocity of 3000 fps. The 100 grain loads are more popular, and it's normally been called simply 250 Savage for the past half century or so, but there you are.

It fires the 250-3000 (AKA 250 Savage cartridge) this was the 1st cartridge to hit the 3000 FPS mark. The case is the parent of the 22-250 cartridge.

What make gun? Check on it carefully; the 250-3000 was an original Savage Arms offering. I had one of the old model 99 lever action jobbies in 250-3000; and it was a very nice caliber. Not surprising that somebody outfitted it elsewhere.
