To avoid unnecessary suffering and cruelty to the coyote I would like to see you at least use a 22 hornet, 218 bee, 222 or 22-250 on these animals*...

22 Mag For Coyotes

Yes, I hunt coyote with a .22 Mag. I use a .22 Mag for 2 reasons, the first being that I usually shoot coyotes in places where I would not want to shoot a high power rifle, and the second being that own a good .22 Mag and I am not going to buy another rifle. Limit shots to under 120 yards or so. If I have to shoot longer ranges than that I shoot them with a .270. I have shot a LOT of coyotes with those 2 rifles, You don't have to buy specialty rifles for this kind of thing. Shoot what you got. Shoot the same kind of bullets all the time so you know where they will hit. Save your money for something worthwhile. (Consider a new guitar, or a Rosetta Stone language course. Something you can use. )

In my life I've only killed two coyotes. The first one was rabid and I shot it twice with a .35 Remington, my friend shot it once with a .30-06 (through the shoulder) and when it tried to get up, my other friend finished it off with a head shot from a .357 Magnum (S & W Model 686 4" barrel). The other one was caught in a trap and could not be released so I finished it off with a 12 gauge o/u shotgun.

I know a lot of people who have taken coyotes with both the .22 LR and the .22 Magnum. Head shots work best with these small caliber rifles and ranges should be within a hundred yards (or less for the .22 LR), certainly not much further with the magnun.

Good luck.

I've taken Coyote's at 110 yards with a .22 Magnum and 3-9X32 Burris Scope. Of the 7 I've gotten with my 22.Magnum only 4 dropped in their tracks. The other 3 ran away wounded and dropped after going about 20-50 yards away. I won't tell you to get a bigger centerfire rifle, but I will tell you to go down instead of up with a .17MHR caliber rifle. As far as Coyote's go I don't even try to hunt them anymore with my .22 mag.. The doizen I have killed in the last two years all went down on the spot with ranges varying from 90 yards to just under 200 yards. I shot all of them with Remington 17 grain Gold Box Accu-tip factory ammo. I chronographed these at 2546 FPS muzzle velocity. The best .22 Magnum bullet just can't touch this and the added flat shooting range allows me to "sky bust" the Coyote's before they even know I'm there. You could trade a few of the 20 or so rifles you have for a .17 pretty easily. I know this isn't what you probably want to hear, but you need to check this out. I used to be sold on the .22 Magnum myself. Good luck either way!

I dont have one, but a good friend coyote hunts with it for lack of a better gun. I had my shotgun and a .22lr for several hunts until i had a coyote at 65 yards and my .22 richocheted off its head. I never used it again. My shotgun was only accurate to about 75 yards, so i quit with that one quick. I now have a .243 and it is too effective actually. I shot probly 10 and have never had one run away, they drop dead with an 80 grain ballistic tip. My friend has never dropped one cold. It does kill them good to about 100 yards and after that, they just dont have the power. they normally go a hundred hards on him, some less some more.

my grandparents have an old Winchester model 9422 .22 magnum in lever action. the .22 magnum isn't any good for more than 100 yards, after that it just doesn't have enough power. my grandfather is too stubborn to buy a new gun, like a .223 like I've been telling him to buy ever since they got their alpacas. i have never shot at one before, and neither has anyone shot one with that gun. but my personal preference would be a .223 with 55 grain bullets. the .223 is deadly up to 400 yards on coyotes, fox, and groundhogs. get a .223, you wont be disappointed.

I'd opt for a 223. if you get a head shot or heart shot at 50 - 100 yards with the 22 mag .
