When its icy-cold

I had a chance this weekend to play with a few 17HMRs at a local hunting outfitter. I compared the Savage, Marlin, Remington, Henry, and Ruger models side by side. The Ruger is my first choice and the most expensive. Around $509.00....... The Savage and Remington models were a far second.

I like the 'controlled feed' of the Ruger. If you chamber a round, drop the magazine and open the bolt.....................the bolt 'holds' the round in place all the way to the extractor.
Not to mention the flawless and flush-to-stock Ruger rotary magazine. It makes it nice to be able to carry the rifle at its balance point (unlike my Marlin 25MN in .22 Mag).
Do you agree that the Ruger is superior to the other rifles?

Although it does have a flat point, it the surface area of the point is a tad smaller than the primer of the round in front of it, and I know the dangers of loading spitzer-type ammunition in a tubular magazine. Is this stuff technically safe to load more than one at a time in the magazine, or can you only do that with flat-nosed or rounded ammunition?

I'm not into hunting, I like guns but not to do any harm to animals. If you are not wasting the animal then I understand, I was curious though which is a quicker kill and or less painful. I know my Uncle prefres a BO.

I am going to go deer hunting up north this November in a big woods that always has tons of bear tracks in it. I asked my pa what I should do if one of those bears gets hungry and starts drooling on my boots while I'm hunting. He says that a bear's heart beats so slow that it doesn't pay to shoot it in the heart and that he heard that a bullet from a .22 won't make it through a bear's skull. I don't think that I'll have any problems with a bear as I'll be with other people, but now I'm curious as to what to do in such a situation.

I deer hunt with a Savage 30-30 ... pretty small and old, but it gets the job done, & I would never trade it in for anything! The clip can carry 3 bullets; so, I can have 4 bullets in there at a time. One for each kneecap on the bear, right?

I haven't been bear hunting which is why I have no idea about this stuff, and I'm sure that bear hunters use much bigger rifles, but what does one do while carrying only a small rifle during a bear attack?

rules are simple
1. rimfire rifle
2. rimfire pistol
3.centerfire rifle
4 centerfire handgun
5 shot gun
and why

1. would be a ruger 10/22 as it is cheaper than 17hmr and 10/22 is a great rifle
2. ruger super single six it is a wheel gun and will shoot 22mag as well as 22lr
3. my M1917 30/06 it is bolt action, accurate, and is a 30/06
4.ruger blackhawk in 44 mag great pistol, single action, and is a good round
5. 12 gauge remington 870 cant go wrong a pump action or 12 gauge

have fun with it If it has been posted befor i missed it

I am extremely frustrated with this question because of all the different sides I hear about it. Some say that penetration and caliber are all that really matter because kinetic energy only affects the temporary wound cavity, which can sustain an incredible amount of damage. I have also heard that overpenetration can be a good thing because all the kinetic energy of a bullet in flight does not need to deposit in the body for it to be effective. So does kinetic energy really have little to no impact on the damage of flesh? An additional factor to be considered is whether or not kinetic energy is only irrelevent to the effectiveness of PISTOL rounds due to their generally low velocities. Perhaps the allegations that kinetic energy has nothing to do with stopping power only applies to (lower powered) pistol rounds.

How can I get more on-line votes?
I was wondering if anyone has ideas of how I can get more people to vote for me on-line. My wife and I are on The Dream Season tv show, which is on The Outdoor Channel. The winner is selected by public vote. We are Team Wisconsin and are considered the underdogs. I would love to find a way for the underdogs to come out ahead !
To vote go to:
